I have to keep my boat some distance from my home covered with a tarp. Last year the tarp blew out and water found its way into the bilge. Since it freezes here, should I put antifreeze in the bilge? It is a Catalina 25 wing keel.

I put some in my bilge, and also ran my electric bilge pump to winterize the pump and hose.

Couldn't hurt, but I think you would be better off developing a sturdier cover system. Searching the forum should give you some ideas.

Will the non-tox antifreeze adversely affect the stainless steel bolts? I'm not certain that a little ice in the bilge will hurt much (I could be convinced otherwise), but I'd be concerned that it could attack the stainless bolts in some way. ??????

I have gone both ways. The antifreeze will leave a sticky film that is hard to remove come spring. Now I usually don't bother.

Given the shape of the bilge, expansion of water when it freezes shouldn't be a problem. So, I wouldn't bother.

I used to put some pink stuff in the sump, and my keel bolts remained shiny... (Right Bruce?) I suspect if that stuff could attack stainless, it would not be "non-toxic", suitable for potable water systems.

Yes Dave, last time I checked they were still shiny. Wondering whether in spite of the shine they're ready to snap off? I could try unscrewing them, but if it works, why fix it?

Testing to failure is the only absolute measure. Get a big torque wrench and crank them down until the break and you'll know how strong they were

Dave, I'm not sure Bruce is strong enough to do that. Are you volunteering to add some extra torque?

I don't think my torque wrench is big enough.
