Nice DIY Paul. I cheated & picked up an extension I found at WallyWorld for about $15. I bought two, one for SL & one for the Avon. Easy to put on at the start of a sail and easy to take off so someone else doesn't take it off for me.
They also make a more expensive one with a linkage in the middle that lets you bend it.
I've frequently thought that having one with a 90° bend in it would be handy for getting around the rails on the stern. Kinda a tiller extension to raise the mechanism up above the rails so they don't get in the way. I don't use the throttle on the tiller (much), but I do rotate the engine (still don't have a working hard or soft link).
