A friend and I spent the day going to the New York Boat Show yesterday. Not a single keel-boat anywhere, although a Beneteau rep had a small booth. I did see sailing kayaks, folding canoes, a Hobie sail-kayak with amas, and Laser/Performance (Vanguard) had a 15 foot dinghy there.
We mainly spent time visiting the vendors' booths. There was the usual guy selling fender adjusters (I use a knot), another one with softside coolers (I've got a few already), the newest thing in marine heads and, of course, bow thrusters.
My buddy has a 26 ft stinkpot so we looked at all the power boats. There were some nice ones, but mostly a great assortment of large and small very overpriced power boats.
My fav from a practical point of view is the Boston Whaler (although they've gotten much glitzy-er than in the past), while the Azimut 55 was the whale of the show. Sabre had some nice looking cruisers (I am not thinking about going over to the dark side).
In the current economy, I cannot imagine how anybody can even think of buying such an extravagance, unless they work on Wall St or work for a bank that got a buy-out.
While I enjoyed a day in NY with a buddy, the NY Boat Show was not worth the time.

I have not been to the NY Boat Show for over a decade as it has both shrunk in size and morphed into a strictly power event. I walked away from the last show years ago frustrated that even the suppliers for services and accessories had seemingly abandoned the event. I really want to attend a strictly sail show but each one seems to conflict with my work schedule -- alas, will just continue to attend the Norwalk show.

Pick one of the B&Bs within walking distance and make a visit out of it.
I'll make my annual pilgrimage to the Cleveland show next week. I'll look at the 4 or 5 keel boats on display, drool a little. Then, I'll go look at the home made wooden boats that are always interesting. Maybe look at a stinkpot or 2. I'll renew my BoatUS towing and get a free tote bag. If my daughter goes along, we'll ride the giant ferris wheel that's in the middle of the convention center.
The best part of the show will be filling out the free subscription cards for Cruising World and Sail magazines since they come with the price of admission. And, the ferris wheel with my kid.
