Agree - Extremely odd. Nevermind the fact that the skipper will be in a heap of trouble if he returns but I would think likely to be brought up on kidnapping charges by the local officials besides being sued by the workman for lost wages and subjecting him to an involuntary trip that robs him of his freedoms and indequate advanced preparation.
I'm thinking this mechanic wanted to go on the trip. It would not be very had to disable the vessel - cut the halyards and any collection of wires on the engine?

I especially wouldn't disable one that didn't have emergency locator equipment on board.

I'm pretty sure I would have noticed the engine start up and the motion of the boat as it departed. Maybe he was just so dumbfounded that he couldn't believe the captain (loosely applied here) would actually depart with a shanghai'd sailor. By the time he realized he was stuck he couldn't take any action.
The fact that the mechanic did not take aggressive action to curtail the trip does not surprise me since the same thing happened to the screenwriter onboard that ship in the King Kong movie with Jack Black !
