I watched the WM video they have on the site. I am currently redoing my boat´s electrical and I liked this a lot.
I like the idea of not having to make a marking on the cord to find the position alignment of Cord and outlet. And, silly me, I do like Orange way more than the Yellow.
Yeah but really. How hard is it to plug in a twist lock connection that can ONLY GO ONE WAY ??? I saw this in the new Defender and West Marine catalogs. It just seems way too gimicky to have to pay 1/3 more for something that is maybe somewhat better. They claim: 1. Its waterproof. Well so is the standard connection. 2. It locks in place. So does the standard connection. 3. It pushes straight in. And this is important because ??? 4. 20x more connector surface. Well maybe, although twist lock plugs and outlets have been approved by UL forever and they generally won't mark something approved if it can't handle the power load required.
I remember P/S reporting on these in the past year or so, but not an actual test. I don't remember what they specifically liked about them, but they did have a positive impression. I am on Steve's side. Just because an upgrade is available for something that works already works well doesn't mean you need it. Replacing a 500 pound rated hanger with a 1000 pounder for a 100 pound load doesn't really improve anything.
"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time....." There's always somebody hawking a better mousetrap, but it doesn't necessarily mean that you'll catch more mice!
Two things I likede: Seems there was a connection that included an LED light on it? Another is the internal bi-metal self-resetting thermal switch. Good advice is to always inspect the oultet and plug.
I think the LED light is a nice option and I agree, having a sort of thermal breaker would be a useful advantage. As to the light, look at the new Marinco EEL cords. They have a built-in cord lite and utilize the standard twist lock connection. They also have power indicators at each end of the cord that eliminate reverse polarity issues. At West Marine they sell this new Marinco 25' 30 Amp cord for $89.99 whereas the same 25 foot 30 Amp cord in the new SmartPlug style sells for $127.99. Of course that's just the cord. To upgrade to a SmartPlug you would pay an additional $139.00 for the replacement inlet.
