I’m planning to trailer my ’89 C-25 SR/WK over to San Diego from Phoenix for a couple of weeks in late June/early July 2012.

I’m planning to sail to up the coast as far north as Marina Del Rey and out to Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands.

I hope this thread will attract the attention of the “Port Captains” in the area, or anyone else with local knowledge, and/or anyone who would like to ride along on my boat, or would like to buddy-boat for any portion of the trip.

The planning process is just beginning, but some questions have come to mind already.

I usually ramp launch in Lake Pleasant, but when I go to the ocean I wonder about having a travel lift take my boat off the trailer in order to save dipping my truck in the salt water. Where in San Diego could I go for that service, and what might it cost?

I hope to anchor out most of the time, but I’ll want to take a slip for an occasional night to get a hot shower and charge my batteries. San Diego has a municipal dock for transients that’s quite inexpensive. Do other harbors have similar arrangements?

If I have to use commercial marinas, I guess I can get together some phone numbers of marinas in ports up the mainland, and just call on my cell phone to find a slip when I get close?

For nights when I don’t take a slip, how can I find free anchorages in the mainland ports?

For anchoring in the islands, I think I need more than my normal 200’ anchor rode. Can I just tie two rodes together to make a longer rode?

For weather info, I’ll rely on NWS transmissions on VHF when I’m on the water. If I can get a wifi signal in port, I’ll use buoyweather.com and weatherundergroud.com. Any other suggestions?

The trip is still months away, but I’m getting excited already. Looking forward to any input from the group.

Dan, sounds like a great trip. I will let those in the SD area chime in. I however am in Newport Beach, north of SD and south of Marina Del Rey. love to talk about what available here. There are plenty of places to either moor or anchor in my harbor. Don't know if however you want to sail up coast or across the Pacific to Catalina and then over to MDR. Keep me posted.

Dan... you'll have a wonderful time exploring the area and wish we could come. It was our choice to overwinter in the San Diego area for several years

You may wish to check out Mission Bay with all its attractions, entertainment, boardwalks, walk and bicycle path and much more. You'll be able to anchor free of charge, at least up to last year, in the Mariners Basin and have guest slips available at Marina Village Marina (call Larissa Horvath | Marina Village Marina *: larissa@marinavillage.net 1936 Quivira Way - San Diego, CA 92109
Ph: 619.224.3125 | Fx: 619.398.9211) at very reasonable rates, by day, week or month and great people. Google Earth for more detail

Next to Aqua Center at 1548 Quivira Way, San Diego, CA 92109 (619) 523-9577 is a wharf and maintenance place with a boat-lift should you wish to use that service. Trailer/truck storage is a bit of a dilemma but someone should be able to help you at the two places mentioned. Mission Bay has several excellent launching ramps in proximity to Seaworld, however, you may need a hitch extension/cable to launch. #8206;

Hi, Piseas, thanks for your reply.

I’m giving some thought to launching in Newport Beach rather than San Diego, so that I don’t have to claw my way upwind from the South.

If I ended my trip in San Diego, do you suppose there’s an easy bus or train connection that would bring me back to Newport Beach to pick up my truck & trailer?

How about parking? Where can I leave my truck & trailer for 2 or 3 weeks?

I have a commitment to take a couple of friends sailing in the first few days that I’m on the water. These are folks who get seasick looking at a postcard of the ocean. If I launch in San Diego, I can sail them on the bay all day with a good chance of a smooth ride and lots of interesting things for them to look at.

Is the sheltered area at Newport Beach big enough to spend an afternoon sailing there? Any nice restaurants with courtesy docks, or any other suggestions to help a couple of landlubbers have a nice time?

As I look at your harbor on Google Maps, where are the public anchorages?

I need eventually to get to Marina Del Rey to pick up some passengers. How’s the sail from Newport Beach? Can you normally make it in a day? Can you make it in a day from Long Beach? Are there any other decent ports in between?

Thanks again for your help.
