So during the year I got new halyards, new masthead sheaves to convert to in mast rope halyards, Schaefer exit plates, Mast base plate, new blocks, deck organizer, triple clutches, 4 new all rope halyards and topping lift long enough to take them all the way to the cockpit.
I got all this during the year while sailing on my old wire/rope halyards and I plan on rigging my new setup before next year´s season.
This saturday I went to de-comission my boat for the winter and since I don´t take my mast down for it but I know I´ll be doing in the spring when the birds start to sing again, I decided to try and run messenger lines for the halyards just for practice.
And then it all started: The first halyards jammed the loop on the mast head but with some winch "persuasion" went right through and there I was with my first messenger line in place.
On for the second halyard and the loop jammed again, so let´s just try some more of that "incentive" a snap and a clang before the loop passed the aft sheave only to jam itself on the forward sheave while the wind gently Knoted my two messenger lines at the masthead.
So Now I have two messenger lines and a jammed wire halyard at my masthead. Isn´t this awesome?
I am so glad I had already planned to take the mast down before the next season!!!
Happy Holidays

It is a glorious goal and you will love the result, regardless of the frustration now. Did you butt stitch the messengers? I usually butt stitch to the bitter end of the old halyard and pull the new one through. I hope the exit plates go well, did you consider slots up higher? Recall I used blocks on the mast plate with the exit blocks to reduce the "trip" angle of the halyard route to the deck organizer. Cutting your own locations for those exit plates will allow some control of that angle, but I have no idea if there is a minimum distance above the maststep cheeks that is controlling. Once again, I think if I were doing a virgin mast I might go with the slots further up the mast.
Hi Frank, I will use the Schaefer Exit plate ( http://www.mauriprosailing.com/Schaefer-Exit-Plates/SCH3446.html ) and yes I am planning on making exits higher up the mast so it also helps to sweat the line.... This how it should look like when I am done, what do you think?
since the Schaefer Exit plate require just an oblong hole of 2 1/4" x 13/16" I am planing in drilling two 13/16 holes and cut the sides between them.
I will be doing a step by step of the hole process, starting with lowering the mast ending with the boat launched and sailing... My plan is to include pictures and videos on a topic here in the forum, maybe a Tech Tips article...
Hy Jim, how many months are there in a few months? I plan on doing this late January, early February, does it help? I can always try and make it before New Year´s, Admiral permiting....
Redeye, I did some experimenting this past season and seems like the pop top is fine either up or down. Ass soon as I finish with all this we will have full confirmation.
Hi Jim, I am trying so hard not to start this with the loudest laught I can make!!! I wish.... I wish I had had the time to even pay a visit to the boat and say hi, but things have been crazy here at home with a new baby on the way. Maybe sometime in the future I´ll tell you all about my crazy last few years from starting as an unmarried Theater arts clown in Brazil to a Sailing instructor and boat design student in Saint Louis, married with a kid on the way in 2.5 years.... If I am not crazy by now I´ll get there really soon.
Anyway, Lee Panza here on the forum did exactly what I plan to do plus a few great Ideas I´ll surely steal for myself:
