This will be my first year to sail Karma and I would like to get some work done before I launch her. Specifically, update the thru-hull fittings, inspect the swing keel and paint the bottom. I don't believe that I have enough knowledge at this point to do the work myself nor do I have the facilities to do it.

I'm looking for recommendations for a service shop that can do this type of work around the Sandusky Ohio area.

Brands in Port Clinton is a full service marina and I have been very pleased with work they have done for me. Their rates are not cheap but are in line with others. It was cheaper to have the rigger make a new keel cable than to buy one from CD, but you should to order CD's pivoting keel cable connector and have them replace the old eyebolt so the boat doesn't have to sit on stands waiting for delivery. John R. may know some places in Sandusky. It's also a nice sail around Catawba and down to Port Clinton.

My marina, Sandusky Harbor Marina, also has a full service department and could likely do the work. This is clearly the busiest time of the year for these marinas so the wait may be considerable. You might ask the question of your marina manager. He may know of a local contractor that can do the work at Bay Point.

The company that owns my marina also has one in Port Clinton. Lakefront Marina also has a full service department.

I'd imagine that the costs will be about the same at both these and Brands. The last time I had any work done at Sandusky Harbor was in 2007 and the rate was around $70/hour. I wouldn't expect any bargains this time of year.

Before commiting to a <s>rapist</s> marina to do the work, you may want to ask some knowledgeable local sailors out to the boat for opinions. At the very least you won't be walking into the marina <s>naked</s> blind, and at the very best you may find that you don't need as much work done as you thought.

You might want to get somwone that knows Catalinas to check it out. You might be able to sail it until a more opportune time for the work to be done.

Guys,

Good point about waiting until a more opportune time to get the work done. I don't think that anything has to be done immediately except paint the bottom. I just thought that getting the work done before it is painted would be a better way to go. I'm waiting for a quote from Brands now and hoping that I can reserve some time in early April if I make a financial commitment to them.

Dave B. .......Great idea to order parts ahead of time. Did you mean the Keel Eyebolt Retrofit Assy. Product #: E1303?

That's it, and the turning ball that the lift cable rides over is part E2082. You will be secure for a few years with the cable, attachment, and ball replaced.
