Today I closed on a 1984 SRFK with an older 9.9hp Yamaha 4 stroke electric start.
I've been looking all winter around the NorthEast and this popped up on ebay a couple of days ago and it was only 5 mins from my house.
I couldn't say no for the price. It needs a little TLC but all in all in good shape. The RF jib has a small tear that will need to be repaired, the outboard needs to be serviced and have water pump/impeller replaced, and all the interior plumping lines need to be replaced.
All in all I think I found a great deal. Not the cleanest or most updated boat out there but a good first sailboat that I think will be a lot of fun for the family and I.
First step was getting the outboard home and I built a stand in my garage. The local Yamaha dealer was closed when I got there this afternoon but I was hoping to pick up a service manual and all the parts to tune up and repair the water pump and impeller. I'm planning to change the oil, lower unit oil, replace plugs and fuel filter and change the impeller and water pump. Anyone recommend any other service before I get her back on the boat?
Tomorrow I plan to go and take the jib down to see about repair or replacement. Should be interesting, I'm not sure what kind of Furling system it is, I couldn't find any numbers or name on it.
I saw that listing and was thinking of you but figured you had your hands full between all the boats you were investigating and issues in FL. I am sure you have a fine boat and the "TLC" part is a great way to get to know your on-water partner. Welcome and I look forward to seeing you on the Sound!
Welcome!!! Get to know this web site http://www.catalinadirect.com/and buy this bookhttp://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display& product_ID=4& ParentCat=7best $10 you'll spend on her. Have a survey done...I know it's a bit late, usually done before you buy but still, it's good to know things that must be fixed and things that should be fixed. It's also a good way to get very intimate with your new lady Believe me, my young friend, there is NOTHING--absolute nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
Congratulations I know you will enjoy the boat. Especially after all the TLC/maintenance stuff is finished. I have been doing TLC stuff for two months now and three items left on the list then back to the lake. Lots of help on this site available.
Sean, Congratulations and welcome to LI Sound C-25 sailing! You now join John "Peregrin" Gisondi, Scott "Islander" Bond, Peter "bigelowp" Bigelow, Dave "Stinkpotter" Bristle and I and lots of others out on our little pond.
She looks very clean inside, and the original-looking cushions are so retro-cool!
With about 7 weeks left before May 1, I've got about 14 weekends of projects to do, so I can imagine what you'd like to do regarding "a little TLC".
TLC is the best way to get to know your boat and make her uniquely yours. I've had alot of things to do to mine, and probably always will as I tend to tinker constantly. It is all this work though, changes and customizations, that have made my boat. "My Boat"....this is what you get to start doing now! From the easy "that's cool" fixes to the busted knuckle "you sorry %$#%&" sessions....it's all good.
Sean, welcome and good luck. I'm just around the corner if you need a hand on anything or just questions. The furler looks like it might be a Furlex,Hard to tell in those photos so if it looks like this it is.

Sadly this book isn't available right now. Catalina Direct is working on a new edition and not selling the old anymore.
Congrats on the next boat, I also just got a 1984 TR FK.
Don't worry about the Catalina Direct book being "unavailable"--they update it every year and send out free updates to whoever has bought it.
I'll echo Mark's recommendation for a survey. It could be priceless in helping you decide what must be done versus not, before you safely and confidently enjoy your new lady on the water this year.
Congratulations! If ever you head to the eastern reaches of L.I.S, get in touch!
Congrats on getting your new boat ! What a nice way to start off the season ! Don't get too bogged down with major stuff. Tackle what you must and then get out and enjoy yourself. During this first season, you will get used to your boat and can then better plan what major jobs you want to tackle later in the season or when the main season ends in the Fall.
Your sailing out of Northport ! I remember the area back in the days (1980-1985) when I owned a brand new ODay 23. I loved Huntington Bay and then you always have an an infinite number of destinations or cruising areas in LI Sound ! You are in a perfect area to be sailing with your Cat 25.
Congrats on the plunge! I noticed your screen name and wanted to let you know I'm in KISP often for work (I fly for an airline where "Bags Fly Free"). I had an '82 TR Swinger that I truly loved. I sold it last year to get a little more waterline for my regular crew of one wife and three offspring. My '82 was in need of a lot of TLC when I bought her and I learned a great deal about the C-25. Let me know if you want to get together next time I'm in LI.
Sorry guys I've been working the past couple of days and spent last night in the garage wrestling with the lower unit on my Yamaha 9.9. It looks like I have a bad seal somewhere and I am trying to find out where.
I am heading down to the marina now to have a closer look at the furler, will take pics and see what you guys think.
Tom I'm with JetBlue. My uncle has been with you guys for almost 30 years now, you probably know him. He's in the training dept. Shoot me a PM.
