i have a quickie here, tomorrow i'll go work on my mast, and i'm just wondering if i need to put tef-gel (the stuff that will block galvanic corrosion between aluminum and stainless steel)on the clevis pin that holds the sheaves in the masthead??
When I attempted to replace my sheaves the pins were frozen to the mast head and I ended up fracturing the masthead trying to remove them so I think some type of protection is needed. I put some anti-seize compound on the pins this time around.
thanks for the tips, i'm back from the boat, i did all the overhauling i could do short of putting the new lines on, i'll wait just before stepping the mast...
i removed the old electrical wires, my goodness it was dry and ugly and all cracked... and to make things worst the person who installed them taped big blocks of foam every 3' but it was all dried up so the blocks would keep jamming on the bolt and screws inside... :-/ i finally managed to remove them and put the new wires (with 3 tie wraps in a circle every 4' or so...) went well the tricky part is getting the 3 wires for the deck/steam light out of a 1/2" hole in the middle of the mast... put in a new deck/steam light (i had the old wooden steam light), wow those lights are cheap... the deck light is an halogen that's not protected from the elements and if you press it too hard it'll dismount and you're stuck to remove the cover... for the price Aqua Signal sell those, they could have made them better...
i also put dielectric grease on all the contacts in the lights, put in LEDs also (except for the halogen deck light)
i put a small block on the starboard spreader to carry flags or markers (i fixed the block and deck light with aluminum pop rivets with tef-gel between the rivets and the stainless parts), put in the new windex (the rod, i'll put the "bird" before stepping), new anchor light (also LED)
i didn't put the spreader booths since the shrouds have moved a bit on the spreader even though they're fixed with steel wire, i'll wait before stepping to put the shrouds at the right height
for the actual clevis pin and sheaves it was a bit tricky because the tef-gel becomes quite sticky after a while and i didn't want to gunk up my sheaves so i had to put just a slight amount inside the clevis pin head and on the opposite pin hole on the masthead so i could set everything up while putting gel only and the contact point between the pins and the masthead... while maintaining the aluminum plate and pin and sheaves...
the PO had put caulking on all the cotter pins on the masthead... i don't know why he did this
i had to remove the masthead and i was wondering if i should put a new self locking nut on the main shrouds bolt? i doubt it can become loose by itself though
