Sounds like you're good but I've heard for a long time that replacing the impeller every 3 years or so is recommended. I personally just go with the flow (pun intended) and change it out when it looks like it needs it. As far as methods and supplies I have nothing to add except the obvious, ask the question in a general search of the internet and also on youtube.
As long as you have a strong water stream, don't worry about it. However, it's a good idea to have the parts on hand for when the time does come to change the impeller. Try these guys:
Also, regarding the Nissan 9.8, it's a good idea to have on hand a backup set of bracket nuts, part #29 in the diagram below. Both of mine vibrated loose completely not too long after I bought it:
Thanks David, that bracket nut issue must have been dramatic
I found the page on boats.net that shows the impeller diagram. Very helpful, I'll contact them and order the parts.
Agreed! Better to have the bits on hand to prevent delay if the stream does weaken. But so far the engine has performed great. It is time for a carb cleanout though.
Order the low idle jet and replace it when you tear down the carb. That's the only way to get to it, and it clogs up very easily.
Regarding the bracket nuts, fortunately, I noticed something odd about the way the motor was running, idled back, and limped back into the slip. It could have been a disaster. You can reach your hand back there around the housing just barely to check them, and I recommend doing it regularly. They should not feel loose. If one of the nuts does come off completely, the plastic housing around the shaft should catch it. Be careful removing the housing, and you should be able to retrieve the nut.
Paul, Did you ever do your impeller replacement? I noticed that ours isn't peeing as well as it should last time we were out, so I want to do the swap. I already have the kit, I'm just wondering if I can do the swap while the boat's in the water?
My plan is to back the boat into it's slip so the OB is over the dock. Does anyone know if this is viable? I really don't want to have to remove the engine to do this.
