Tomorrow's weather in central Long Island sound calls for 90 degrees at 59 degree dew point with southwesterlies building from 9 mph at 9 am to 14 mph by 2pm, hanging in until 5 or 6 pm. Cloud cover will be nonexistent and visibility will be 10 miles or greater. Waves will start as ripples in the morning and can build to 2-3 ft by late afternoon. I can start around 11am and head ENE (60 degrees M, 75 degrees true) running with the winds. Ebb tide, heading east toward the Race starts at 11 and flows until slack at 4 pm. With strong tail winds and a 1-2 kt current I can make 6-7kts easy so with a 7:30 pm sunset I can sail for 8 hours and cover 50 nm. On Saturday, temps are low 80s with lower dewpoints and winds are from northwest and so can reach all day long at 4.5 kts all the way back. If I get an 8 am start I can ride the flood tide west until about 1 pm. Sounds pretty nice! Then I can do some honeydos and visit inlaws on Sunday for extra credit and relax on Labor Day by the BBQ and cooler. Wish me luck!

Enjoy! I was out today--brilliant sky with a big SW breeze and seas--had the windshield wipers running as I crashed 3' chop and lots of big wakes at 15-20 kts... At times like these, I miss the softer, steadier ride of a keelboat.
I'll be boatless in Darien for the holiday weekend.
I'm hearing updated winds forecasts of 15-20 kts for later today. Revising plans to take a short sail in protected waters today and visit friends nearby. With milder winds forecasted tomorrow, I plan a longer sail on Saturday. PJ harbor anyone?
I sailed out of Port Jefferson as a baby, according to a snapshot from the last century sometime!
I'm going to try to get out this evening and go night sailing on the Chesapeake with the blue moon and temps in the 80's at night. This is a month with 2 full moons, thus the "blue moon".
I was sailing out of Annapolis on a 40 footer last night, with clear skies, a nearly full moon, cool breezes, doing over 7 kts, and enjoying the setting sun and a cold beer. Perfect!
I got out a little later than I'd planned (work, kids, errands) but it actually worked out fine. The wind was pretty fierce earlier (25 kt gusts) but then as I headed out the waves and gusts settled down to 12 kts. Perfect! I had reefed the main prior to going out and had the jib furled. Soon I found that I had to unfurl the jib completely to make 4kts to windward. I sailed around for a few hours on a close reach both ways. Then, as I was on a run back into port, the gusts picked up again and sailed up to the dock. Perfect day with a beautiful sunset and awesome blue moon.
