Hello everyone. I am new to this club. I am in the market to purchase a trailerable sailboat and one of them is the Cat 250. I was considering the Mac 26X and even waited to see the new 26M (Ugh) on the interior. I was hoping someone with experience on the Cat 250 could share with me on how she performs in different weathwer and wether or not they would consider her for Blue Water or just Coastal. Any information would be appreciated...

ALWAYS GOOD

The C250 serves very well as a coastal cruiser. Available in two configurations, the wing keel is chosen if the boat is slipped or moored and only occassionally trailered, and the water ballast if trailered often.

Do some searching thru the archives and feel free to ask any specific questions. There was recently a question about c250 critiques that should be helpful to you.

Hi Alex

I have owned both a Mac 26X and my current boat a 250WK. They maybe similar in size, but that is where the similarities end!! I had always wanted a Mac 26X and thought this was my "Dream" boat. Was I ever wrong!! It just didn't sail well..... Always rounding up and usually DFL the few times a year we would race. I bought it new & owned it for 3years. My wife finally said, either stop racing or look for another boat . She didn't have to say that more than once!! So the following Spring we went to the boat show and started looking. Had not really heard much about Catalina, and some of our friends had Hunters and liked them, so I was thinking about the Hunter 260. At the boat show, there was a dealer that had both a Hunter 260 and a Cat 250WK side by side! After looking at both of the boats very carefully, we decided on the 250WK. The boat just seemed to be so much better constructed and the equipment so much more "Heavy Duty" (Winches, Steering, Galley, etc.) than the Hunter (and even $3-5K cheaper than the Hunter, which was a bonus!)and not even comparable to the Mac. Yes, this boat was about $8k more than the Mac, but so worth it!! I vote for the Cat 250!
Oh ya, and the racing? MUCH better..... Usually in the top of the pack and have even had a first !!

Good luck.......

I agree with Jerry Guyot's assessment of the Hunter. I haven't looked at a Mac, but one look inside/outside the Hunter was enough to convince me to stick with Catalina (where my heart had been all along...!). The fit and finish just didn't compare with the Catalina. The Catalina met all my requirements; quality construction/fit/finish on the basics, and a minimum of frills to keep the cost down and let me fit it out the way I want it.

BTW, as I write this, I'm awaiting loan approval to buy the boat, an '03 C250WK...!

thanks....al
