Members,

I'm as close to being a new owner of a 1990 C-25 as one can get. Last decison is in negotiating a new paint job on the hull. PO needs to repair damage to the bow after hitting a dock. Repair involves fiberglass patching and new paint. We have decided to paint the entire hull as an investment and to have an awsome looking boat. What is your advice regarding the boot stripe and cove stripe? Current color scheme is grey stripes (blah, ugly) We are not wedded to a color scheme but would likely change the stripes to blue to match the sail covers and dodger. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance for your input.

Welcome aboard and congrats on the impending purchase!

If I were to paint my boat, the topsides would be a deep navy blue and the bottom would be a deep red (not bright). The boot stripe would be gold. I would replace the rub rail with wood, finished beautifully.

look for genevieve on this forum: another vote for the flagship blue hull. We are painting our boot and sheer stripe as well, though sticking to a simple blue stripe. Next time we paint the topsides, blue it is.

Think you will regret painting the hull for the remaining time you own the boat. Repair the damage and re-finish with gel coat.

You do not paint a hull as an investment. Painted boats are avoided like the plague by knowledgeable buyers. A gelcoat patch is a far better choice. If you are not aware of refinishing products you need to check them out. Bad gelcoat is worth more than good paint. If you have to paint do not change the color from the original gelcoat.

I wouldn't buy a C25 with a painted hull. I might buy a different boat with one but that boat would have to be a VERY special boat. And, I'd have to win the lottery so that I could afford to hire somebody to maintain it.

Are you sure the boat you're looking at already has a painted hull or are you just assuming that?

She truly is lovely, Jim. But, I still wouldn't buy a C25 with a painted hull. Sorry.

Turns out the dent in the bow will be patched and painted to match the hull - hull has never been painted so we will stick with what we have and buff up the gelcoat. Can anyone point me in the right direction for what to use? Steep learning curve for us newbies.
Thanks for the help.

My hull was in dire shape when i bought it so had it regelcoated 14 years ago. still looks good. had a repair after hurricane ike, due to fading the gelcoat patch is a little darker but in a season or two in the sun you wont notice the difference. Don't paint, gel coat.

Use the Search function above to look up "Poli Glow" for a long list of threads debating this polymer finish versus waxes and polishes. I've used them all, on a variety of hulls and conditions, and am on record in several threads on the subject. You can also check out the Poli Glow site.

Some people believe that a boat with a painted hull is hiding damage. Also a painted boat will need to be repainted and repainted and repainted until the cows come home.
If it were my boat, I would make the repairs using West Systems epoxy. Document everything with photos and finish with gelcoat. The gelcoat will never match undetectable but at least you wont have to paint the boat over and over again. The paint repair won't match either.
There is nothing wrong with repairs that are done right.
