Weather held to the forecast, winds in the teens with gusts in the low 20's yesterday and today. JaM fleet raced only Sat., we came in 2nd. after 2 windward/leward races sailing a C-22. Owner/skipper was a novice, so I spent a lot of the day helping her. We had 4 on the boat. It was a "2 hands on the tiller" day. Today I got a ride on a J32 as a winch grinder. Sweet boat! Today was some of the strongest wind I've ever sailed in. Glad I wasn't on the C-22. Worn out but we had a great time. On the J32, we were making over 7 kts going upwind and over 8 kts sailing downwind with the main and small jib.
We held our annual Force 5 Regatta on our lake this past weekend. I crewed with a 69 yr old member of our C-22 fleet. Winds Sat. were out of the north 8-13 gusting to the upper teens and Sun. in the mid teens gusting to 25. We took 2nd and 5th Sat. almost capsizing on the first of 2 downwind legs in a bungled up whisker pole gybe (mostly my fault). After that the skipper declined to sail the 3rd race and what we found out later to be the 4th race. Both of us were beat up pretty hard after the 2 races I'm sorry to admit. So, I called the guy who bought my C-25 and asked if he wanted to race Sunday, and thankfully he said yes. It was his first racing experience. With 3 on the boat to spread the workload (and a good night's sleep for me), we pulled out three first places on Sunday, finishing in secong place one point ahead of the 3rd place boat in the fleet of 5 C-22's. All in all a good weekend. The guy who took 1st place, also our current fleet captain, had 4 bullets Sat. and 2nd places on Sun. He sailed conservatively Sunday, a smart move, using a 110 jib. We were flying the 150 all weekend as were the other 3 C-22's. Two weekends back to back with winds in the teens gusting into the 20's! Awesome!
I was out on a leeward-windward course on the lawnmower on Saturday. Woulda been great, but I got caught in too tight on a shrubbery rounding and wiped out a couple marigolds. On the next lap I took the rounding wide and hit the fence.
I wonder if you can mount sails on a riding mower...
