I have some small blisters on the keel about size of a nail (about 10-15). Most are quite hard, but couple i was able to press and dark/brown liquid came out - assuming it's rusty water.

Also small area on keel of Interlux (about 1" by 1") chipped off.

Entire bottom was done with Interlux 2000 (i think) in 2008.

What's the best way to fix it?
1. Grind the blisters and fill them with interlux 2000
2. clean the blisters at the end of the season and let it all dry out over the winter and fill it with interlux in the spring.

Is it a major concern anyway??

My launch date for this season is April 27th... so i only have bit over week left.

Daniel,

Check out the West System website for filler(s) . . . System 2000 is only a water barrier with the consistency of paint.

Adequate drying time is an important factor of this repair - go sailing and collect materials and more knowledge over the summer!

Thanks OJ...

I'll leave it as is and I will address it after the summer. I will grind and smooth out all the blisters and I will leave it till the spring 2013.

Thanks a million!

It isn't rusty water--it's a nasty acidic tea made up of chemicals from the resin. The 1985 fin keel, below the keel-hull joint, is lead encapsulated in a thick layer of fibrous material. Above the joint (the bottom of the sump) is regular fiberglass and gelcoat. If you tap with something, you can tell the difference.

Nail head sized blisters in either place are pretty harmless. The hard ones are probably hard because of the fluid pressure inside--leave them for now, and be careful opening them up in the future. The ones you opened should be allowed to dry, ground or scraped out enough to remove any loose material, and filled with Marine Tex or thickened epoxy. If they're really small, you can fill them with the gelcoat patch that comes in a tube--I would do a least that before painting and launching.
