Check this. I think I'd give way.

Probably not up to EPA standards.

As the article said...it's probably been done before....and yes, I've seen it! There's this show about gold diggers up in Alaska, I think, and one of the barges had engine trouble...so they used the bucket loader in exactly that way....to row the barge.....I think they eventually got overwhelmed by the weather and got a tow....

I was hoping for a plasma drive or something really high tech.

What a disappointment.

Okay - what's the largest Tonka derrick they make...maybe that could be retro-fitted to our bow as an emergency propulsion device.

The tenth of a mile channel at my marina is dredged every year by a barge with a set up almost exactly like the one in the video, but the barge has anchor pilings. After the barge arrives onsite via a small tug, they only use the bucket to reposition the rig along the channel by lifting the anchors then pulling the barge ahead 6-8 feet at a time with the bucket.

Speaking of new propulsion, I was at the boatyard last weekend and I came across a drive system I've never seen before on a powerboat. Looked pretty cool!

That's the new big thing--Volvo IPS pod drives. Most express cruisers above 30 are being built with them (or rear-facing Mercury Zeus pods). Either is more efficient than a straight-shaft inboard, and both can move the boat sideways to or from a dock.

That barge was making good speed!

This is the WallyGator. It has four similar (hydraulically driven) units that retract into the hull when not in use. Really slick but
has miles of hoses and hundreds of hose connections. It set a world sailng speed record (many years ago) on its maiden voyage.

Apparently the barge up in Nome on "Bearing Sea Gold" has two outdrives, but both are broken. They figured out they can move the barge semi-efficiently with just the trackhoe's bucket & thumb. I watched the "after show" a week ago or so, and they plan to have the outdrives working again for the next season. They'll also raise their pilings and pull it along the bottom if they're in shallow enough water.

The Mythbusters did this out on SF Bay a while back, but they had two trackhoes in tandem, so each of them only worked one side of the barge..

That barge in Vietnam was cruising right along, it looks like this isn't his first time doing this.
