I have often mused over the idea of taking my c25 down to the sea of Cortez.

This has made me rethink my dreams...

The guys that caught it were in a 22' skiff. I think you'll be OK, just don't drag the kids on a wake board...

I used to dream about sailing the Sea of Cortez in a Hobie cat. I figured it'd take four folks to do it, two to sail the boat, and two more with a truck & trailer as a support vehicle. The two teams would trade off sailing and driving as you headed down the peninsula. That way you'd always have a semblance of help should something go wrong. If you had long enough, sail all the way down to Cabo San Lucas, then maybe across to mainland Mexico (transporting the truck & trailer on a ferry or whatever), then all the way back up to San Felipe again. I always thought that would be a grand summer vacation. Sadly, I've never even been sailing in Mexican waters, diving, yes, sailing no.

The tides are quite extraordinary in the Sea of Cortez, easily 20'+ between crests. You do not want to be above a shallow-ish shore when the tide goes out, unless you're careening your boat to clean the hull. I've been camping down in San Felipe where the beach probably becomes half a mile wider at low tide, maybe more.

Thanks Frank. I hadn't thought about pool cues. I wonder where I can find the hardware for them? My lathe is certainly long enough to turn a "two piece custom made pool cue" (extra points for knowing the reference). What kind of wood are they typically made from? I know I can get cane joints from Lee Valley, wonder if they'd work? Would still have to find the tips somewhere though.

David, just be careful not to tug on Superman's cape.

The hardware can be found online - I had seen it in a few different places. http://www.woodturnerscatalog.com has some components for walking sticks (cains) that should work, especially for starters, as the connector.

Most custom cues sell for 1-5 thousand dollars. Cues without inlay $200-$1000.

Check out azbilliards.com forum, the cue makers section and the for sale section.
