I have been using a spreadsheet checklist for 7 years and it's been a boon for reducing the 'Dang, we forgot to bring the thinghy'

Just found the Boating Trip Checklist app for my Nook (it's an android app but the app is available for IPads)

Really simple, clean and very easy to use.

Stores the data in a .csv file in really simple format that allows for email to buddies so they can use the same list.

No option to make it multi user (but would be a neat app upgrade) so that others in your party can participate. The data would have to be on the cloud to achieve that, which of course needs cloud access, not always available onboard.

But I'm impressed by the simplicity of the App. So I spent the $0.99 on it.

Paul - Have you hacked your Nook to run Cyanogenmod, or are you just running this app through the B&N Nook store? Cyanogenmod is great, basically turning the Nook into a full 7" Android tablet (WiFi only, though, no wireless). Also has full access to Android Market/Google Play, including some nice free chart plotting apps. And the Nook reader app for Android provides full access to Nook books (but not magazines, unfortunately).

I was able to put the whole install on a partitined SD card without having to root or otherwise modify the Nook software (thus preserving the warranty). At bootup I get a message allowing me to choose whether to boot up Cyanogenmod from the SD card, or generic Nook from the internal RAM.

What version of CyanogenMod are you running with what release of Android? I didn't know you could do this with a Nook. That makes it a very attractive $200-7" tablet. I played around with a Kindle Fire for a few weeks, but was less than impressed and eventually returned it.

CM7, which is based on Android 2.3 IIRC.

The Nook actually has a Bluetooth chip that CM7 can activate. After fiddling with some drivers I was able to get my boat's Bluetooth GPS output into the Nook so the chartplotter apps display current position, SOG, etc.

FYI, the Nook color price is down to $170.

I really like my Kindle Fire...however, I only use it for a nice color ereader. I don't use music (have iPod, iPhone), don't use Video (have MacBook Pro) and use very few apps. I do have about 50 books, couple dozen magazines and a ton of PDF's loaded on it. On a rare occasion I'll use the web browser if I'm too lazy to go get the MBP.

I looked at the other Kindles...and for my use they would have been okay....but I swore, way back when I had a Palm Pilot....no more monocolor devices. As soon as the M130 came out (color Palm Pilot) I bought it and haven't owned a B&W device since.....so, the Fire was my ereader choice. I also felt Amazon's culture was greater than Barns & Noble (Nook).

It goes to the boat with me every time. It sits on my nightstand and I read every night. I'm so happy with it....it was the last thing for me to go digital in my life: my books. Although there is something decidedly pleasurable and tactile holding a real book....the ability to have an entire collection in such a small form factor is worth the trade off.

Granted....I'd love to have a 64Gb 3G iPad....yeah buddy.....just not in the cards for me because I have a 17" MacBook Pro....the KF filled a niche for me....and will do until I finally buy the iPad.

My problem with iPad is how Apple has 100% control over content through AppleStore. So they can carry out their vendettas against Adobe and anyone else they don't like. It's anti-competitive, and will become monopolistic unless there is a customer base for others.

Disclaimer: I own Apple stock, but will sell if enough people follow my advice. ;-)

No hacking here, not enough hours in my day! I write internet server based software as well as my admin job for ACT Security, and my clients keep me pretty busy, that and a few personal projects that I'm happily committed to.

The whole appeal of the Apple culture and products is because of that 100% control. The whole Apple experience...the products and software....is above and beyond simply because of this very tight control. Apple does not have to deal with fragmented, multi platform compatibility issues and dodgy customer experience you find on other platforms.

Apple works so well, the culture almost cult like, because their products work. They just do. Always. There is no need to tweak, fiddle, load drivers, deal with conflicts, myriads of other things, like on other products and platforms. Apple products do what you bought them to do. Every time. You can count on it.

You don't need a brain to use Apple products. Just sit down and start using them for what you bought them for. They work. You don't need to learn how to use them. Just start using them. This is the mass appeal and why the "cult"ure is so strong.

I work in IT. I deal with very complex and difficult issues daily. Lately I've been working on deploying zLinux, a version of Red Hat Linux that runs on IBM Mainframes. z/10's to be specific. There is no training, unless you cobble some RedHat classes with some IBM classes on z/OS, z/VM and Hypervisor...then come up with something about zLinux. I don't have anyone to go to. I have to make it work. I have to figure it out. There is very little out there I can refer to with this cutting edge technology. The buck stops with me and if I don't come up with a solution, it just doesn't get done. No pressure....just millions of dollars invested. By the end of the day, I'm worn out. My brain is mush. The last thing I want to mess with is my personal technology. I just want to use it and have it work.

I am an Apple FanBoi. I switched back in summer of 2007 and it's been the best personal technology decision I've ever made. I have a 24" iMac desktop, a 17" MacBook Pro laptop, an iPhone 4, an iPod Nano 6th gen and an iPod shuffle. I have an Apple TV2 that connects everything media wise to my entertainment center. In the evening when I sit down to surf the net, listen to music, look at pictures, videos, whatever....I don't have to think, fiddle, mess with, deal with.....my stuff just works. Turn it on and go. It also helps that under the hood, I know a crapload about Darwin already.

There is absolutely nothing anyone can say to me, show me, tempt me...to go with any other products. I'm sold. Yes, I bought a Kindle Fire. It filled a need and I didn't spend $900 on an iPad....now, if I didn't have my MBP the iPad would have been a no-brainer....but I'm happy with the KF. An iPad is in my future though, just not yet.

As long as your personal technology works for you....great...I would never disparage other products or people who choose to use them. I have a buddy who hates Apple....not the products, but the company and it's business practices. He fails to see that this ultra closed and controlled system results in quite an incredible customer experience. So, he buys Samsung knockoffs, but instead of telling me how he uses them he talks about all this time spent "rooting" it, hacking it, loading this and that, dual booting, backing up and restoring.....yikes! Man not me...I do that crap all day at work.

There's no denying the appeal of Apple's products, and that some of that appeal comes from 100% control. But I believe that in the long term, innovation and economy will be stifled by Apple's ability to pick winners and losers, and its tendency to throw its weight around to excess. We're already seeing that with their long-time refusal to allow Flash on iOS, and more recently with the federal suit against them for price fixing of e-books. If you read the details of the fed's case against Apple, it is just absolutely appalling, and a sign of huge arrogance that they thought they could get away with it.

Just as the original Mac died in the '90s because corporations and all-important developers moved to more open systems, I think Apple's current wild success will flame out at some point as developers and customers see similar signs of their arrogance and rebel against it.

My stock portfolio hopes I am wrong about this.

Yeah, I've read that. And I've also read that Apple wasn't present at the meetings, wasn't involved with the publishers, and doesn't have a dominant share of the ebook market. (Amazon does)

I thought it was likely the feds case will fail. There are so many conflicting stories out there I don't know who to believe.

Joe, with you on the 'I do that carp all day at work', brain mush after dinner, I'm into planning my next sailing trip.

That and dreaming bigger boat, just don't have the bigger bucks!

That said, I'm toying with a cloud based check list option. Easy program to write.. gotta get my pet project flying first.

Do it here and get a link to it.....that would be a pretty cool addition to the forum. It could be hosted on the forum's server(s).

David,

Barnes & Noble is running a Mothers Day special until May 12. Nook Color is only $150. CyanogenMod7 runs flawlessly on my Nook Color.

FYI, Nook Tablet is not included in their promotion. It has a dual core processor, so has the potential for much zippier performance, but CyanogenMod is not ready for prime time yet on this device. It will be someday, and I may consider upgrading at that time.

By the way, if you run CM7 off an SD card it's critical to have the right type of SD card. SanDisk class 2 or 4 are best. Class 10 is horrible - everyone thinks Class 10 is fastest, but I read that the higher class cards are optimized for fast I/O of large sequential files (i.e. digital video), but have very poor random access I/O of small files (which is what you need to run an OS off of flash memory).

I have the fire and like it, I mostly use it to read, play movies for the kiddo on the boat and light surfing. Not a huge fan of the keyboard. I had an iPad 2 and liked it but it was stolen out of my office three weeks ago. The iPad is too big to be a nice reader IMHO.
