I have a hank-on jib as well, and I learned a great tip from Paul Zell when I sailed with him once on the SF Bay - He keeps the bottom hanks up above the swage by clipping a wooden clothes pin to the forestay under the bottom hank. I've kept a few clothes pins on my boat since then, and I can always hoist the jib easy as pie!

I added a lock washer just above the swag. Get the lock washer that has a hole opening just the size of the wire and bend it open to slip on the wire and then bend it closed. It will seat at the swag and the hank will not run over it.
