Good job! I'm guessing when you made that perfect pivot and backed in like you were on rails, nobody was there to see it!

Dave - that goes without saying. I've docked by boat perfectly 3, maybe 4 times in my life. Only my 5 year old daughter was on board each time and the marina was deserted!!

There was actually one person around. The guy in the boat next to my slip came out very briefly to have a look. Having his boat next to a charter vessel must be a little nerve-racking for him, and he seemed to have a concerned look on his face. But he quickly disappeared when he saw that we were well under control. I was actually a little surprised that he didn't offer to hand us a line.

My second and last time backing into this slip was today. We ended up a little past the slip after I made the pivot, so rather than try to "rescue" a failed attempt (very difficult since the prop walk would push the stern even further past the slip), I just aborted and circled back around. The second time we were aligned perfectly again. This time there were several people working on their boats at the time (including the owner of the charter company), and though they were not openly staring, I suspect that they were looking out the corners of their eyes.

The charter trip was great. We anchored in Broad Creek on Magothy on Tuesday night (rafted with a friend from Sailnet) and on Wednesday we got a mooring ball in Annapolis right at the finish line for the sailboat races. Those guys came right at me, peeling off at the very last second. (I'll post video soon.) Thursday night was going to be very warm, so we planned to go to Eagle Cove on Magothy to catch a good overnight breeze, but we got to Magothy before noon and decided to keep sailing rather than sit still in the heat all day. We sailed all the way up to Worton Creek and got a slip so we could run the A/C overnight.

This morning (our last day) I got up at 5 am and quietly got ready so the admiral could sleep in a little. Since I had no cell phone reception to check the weather, I quietly turned the VHF to weather channel, and was immediately greeted by the screeching sound of NOAA's emergency alarm. There was a severe thunderstorm warning for our area until 8 am. The boat was due back at Rock Hall at noon, and we were 4.5 hours away, so departing at 8 would miss our deadline. But the storms cleared our area at 5:45 and the warning was cancelled early, so we headed out at 6. Out on the Bay I had cell phone reception, so I checked Doppler radar and we were home free. I do not take stupid risks (the world wouldn't end if we missed a deadline to return the boat), so I was prepared to return to Worton Creek if we found unacceptable conditions on the Bay. But things were fine, aside from dead air that required us to motor most of the way.

I love the Bay and cruising in a large, comfortable boat. But the whole thing also gave me a real appreciation for what a great fit our little C250 is for daysailing (and occasional overnights) near home. It's going to be a long time before we are able to spend more than a couple weeks a year cruising, and I can charter a large boat in a fancy marina like Haven Harbour for 2 or 3 weeks for less than the slip/insurance/maintenance costs of a larger boat. So for the next few years (at least) we're going to enjoy sailing our little C250 with its low maintenance and low storage costs, and charter a week or so when we want to go for a whole week.

Looks like a nice trip. Love the gps data in different colors. How did you do that?

Worton Creek - still shallow getting up in there? Last time I was there we couldn't get to the docks 'cuz we draw 6'6"...

There's so much more to do and see on the Chesapeake--I bet you'll be back! I love exploring the Eastern Shore--even by car. We used the Robert Morris Inn in Oxford and a B&B in St. Michaels as our bases--two great little towns to visit by boat, too. Some day I want to get to Smith Island and/or Tangier Island, before they and their 19th Century cultures disappear in the rising water.

Looks like you may have anchored overnight in Broad Creek on the Magothy! That's a pretty spot just a few miles from my marina.

How did your anchoring go?

I imported the GPS tracks into OpenCPN, which gives the option of selecting different colors for each track. Then I took a screenshot of the chart.

Worton was very shallow back by the marina. I recorded as little as 4.3' on my depth sounder, which kinda freaked me out, since the boat's draft is 4.5'. The charter guy told me that the depth was calibrated to read depth from the waterline, not from the transducer, but since I did not run aground I think it was actually recording depth from the transducer.
Well, yeah...I've sailed a C36...and theres tons of pics on the net for them too...but it's better when you post pics of the boat....with people in them...while you're using the boat....under sail, heeled over....chilling in the cockpit, cooking in the galley, sheets/pillows in the berths....you know, "in use" so to speak.
