I have a 9.9 Nissan 4-stroke and when I start it the oil light used to stay on for about 1 or 2 seconds. Now it stays on longer about 4-5 seconds then goes out. Motor runs fine.
Oil level is high. Should I be concerned?

When was the last time you changed the oil?

As long as it goes out within few seconds you should be fine. The idea is to show you that oil pressure light is working. I just bought Tohatsu 9.8 and same thing - light goes on for approx 2 - 5 seconds. Seems to vary.

So I got curious and I looked at the manual just to double check and it states that light should go on for "several" seconds.

As John stated above - ensure maintenance is up to date.

Is there an oil filter or screen on a 4-stroke outboard?

I couldn't find one on our Nissan 9.8. Just don't go too long between oil changes.

On my old car, when the oil light began to hang on for a short time after starting, I found that my oil pump was starting to go. If the oil pickup tube is clogged, the pump may also be getting starved of oil. On another car, I had a bad oil pressure switch - it cracked and eventually started leaking.
If you notice the oil light coming on at low idle, and going off at high RPMs - this would be troubling.
Or if the duration of the oil light at startup gets longer and longer - I'd be worried.
If you don't have time to dig into the problem, I'd keep an eye out for telltale signs.

I would think the oil pressure sensor is probably reacting slowly due to a buildup of sludge on the sensor or the sensor is just getting old. If it is removable you might try cleaning it. As other have stated low oil pressure would usually be most apparent at idle. As long as it is not glowing lightly or intermittently at idle my level of concern would be low.

The light goes off after about 5 seconds. It never even flickers or comes on at idle. My bigest concern is it used to go off faster.

I wouldn't worry if it doesn't continue to increase and doesn't flicker on at an idle.
