My name is Warren and I’m the new owner of David’s (dmpilc) boat Recess.
I am new to sailing and have really learned a lot from this forum. For the last three months I have been reading every book I can get my hands on about sailing, also reading everything on this forum!
It has been a pleasure to work with David. This has been a three month process. David has taken me out several times for sailing lessons. He taught me everything from how to properly cleat the boat to the dock, to the finer elements of tuning the sails. It has truly been a great experience! I don’t think I could have found a better owner to buy a boat from!
You can tell that the boat was really well taken care of, and I will absolutely do the same. While the boat was out of the water I removed the oxidation from the hull by wet sanding it with 600, then 800, followed by 1,000 grit. Then compounded and polished the hull. After that, I rewired the mast and replaced the lights. The steamer was replaced with the steamer/deck light combo, and the anchor light fixture was replaced and upgraded with a cool white LED bulb. The keel cable replacement was next, followed by new bottom paint. I had the cushions recovered, and a few other things that I can’t remember at the moment.
Finally, after spending every day (literally) working on the boat I was able to take the boat out this weekend for the first time. Saturday was a perfect day for sailing. Nice steady breeze. I made a few rookie mistakes, but nothing major. I really enjoyed myself!
Thank you all for being so helpful. I really admire the passion and the willingness to grow this wonderful sport. I look forward to participating in this awesome Cat25 community!
Welcome aboard! It sounds like you have already started down the conscientious owner path. Seamanship starts with a well found boat. Congratulation on a fine start with a nice boat.
Thanks, Warren, for those kind words. He really did do a huge amount of work on Recess, guys, some of which were things that I should have done, or started but didn't finish such as the upholstery work. Also, our marina manager was very kind to let the boat stay in the parking lot for several weeks while he worked on her.
Welcome Warren Hope all goes well with your new-to-you boat. Nice to know the PO too.
Just a suggestion. If you wish, you can create a signature line with your name, the boat's name, keel type, rig type, hull number, mooring location, a photo and maybe even a slogan or philosophic saying.
I mentioned that I made a few rookie mistakes the first weekend taking the boat out. I decided to post my experiences in a new post to help out other new sailors.
Warren, I will add my welcome. After following the threads for 3 months, you have validated for yourself what a great place this is. It does get better.

Got some bad news for you...the rookie mistakes never go away, at least not for me anyway and I've been sailing for over 17 years!
