Apparently you should let your wife know if you are planning on spending the night aboard after racing.
If you don't they wonder if you've drowned when you don't come home. Especially if you stay for a second (third) round of drinks and leave the phone on the boat.
I've spent the night on the boat once without Rita, she thought I was somewhere else (a friend's party, wasn't in the mood) and only realized I was at the boat when I checked into the marina on Foursquare. That didn't go over so well.
While I was out single handing the other day, I kept my phone in it's dry bag, and sent updates to Rita via WhatsApp (a free SMS application). The dry bag lets me use the phone right through the bag, so it was relatively easy. The only caveat is you can't take pictures with the phone in the bag. She was glad of the updates so she didn't have to roll the sweat pumps.
I almost always call when I'm leaving the marina after sailing or if I'm going to be later than usual. We would also usually call each other when we were leaving work, more than just a courtesy - it was also to touch base and see if either of us needed to pick up something on the way home. As for sailing, it is to reassure her that nothing happened to me on the water, and to let her know if I was going to eat with the guys, etc.
When I go out solo, I generally file a float plan (a leftover from my daysailor and kayaking days).
It's a standard form and you can find a copy on the US Coast Guard website. Here's one you can use.
I write mine out on a piece of paper. I include my name, name and type of boat, type/color of car, where parked, time leaving, time of expected return, sailing area or destinations, phone number. I leave a copy in the car and at home.
If I plan to overstay, I will call or text my wife.
We just celebrated our 34th anniversary. Guess it's give and take.

When i got home i had a text from the grlfrnd asking me to let her know i was ok...
All i could do was chuckle.... and text her back. I hafta watch her swim bike run ( tri ) a marathon a month for years...trail running up mountains in the snow. THE Barkley Marathons ... Biking the gaps (mountians) with screaming downhills. and ive spent my life night diving solo and cave diving... offshore alone.. something called hashing for years.
So it really makes me chuckle....but yepper...we text regular updates.. and i worry a lot.. but hey... if you love somebody... set them free!
And if you wanna stay free...ya better keep in touch..
If you've got to take the camera on board when there are bikini's and topless women it is absolutely imperative that you let us review all of those pictures before taking the risk of going home and getting caught with them still on your camera.
So now by rights, we'd have to make that section of the forum be for "Members Only", no? Wouldn't be fittin' if it were wide open for all to see. Paul, do you think you could set that up somehow????
Justifies a satellite phone plan ($40 month unlimited, Globalstar) or even better is their two way pager, SPOT, where you press a button sending an "I'm OK." She'll either love your excitement and perceived distance as you play technical man trying to get 5-10 minutes of good satellite connection, or you continue in your world not hearing hers for a few more hours with the satellite pager. Can't send texts from the phone, unfortunately.
