As part of the July 4 celebrations, we are considering a temporary install of an oversized American flag, from the back stay, about 1/2 way up. A few ideas are being considered; including running a messenger line / halyard of sorts through a small sheave connected to the main headboard back into the cockpit. Once the main is raised, we can run up the flag, which will ride along the back stay attached by some type of clips or small carabiners.
Has anyone tried this before and can share some insights?
how about using your topping lift with some small carabiners to attach to backstay and a small line from the bottom of the flag to the boom. Just a guess, but I think that's what I'd try
Some time ago I tied an icicle hitch to my backstay and hung a small block from the bitter end. I rigged a light line of approximate 50 feet long in a continuous loop from the block to serve as a flag halyard. I extended my boat pole all the way and pushed the icicle hitch and block all the way up the backstay. The coolest part about the hitch is that without pressure it will slide up and down the backstay with the boat pole. But put it under tension and it will tighten up to hold fast. You should give it a try. If you have any questions pls email me or search an old posting I did a few years back.
