A while back I found an ad on CL advertising "anchor chain". I wanted to add some chain to my shorter rode which only has about six feet of chain (my longer rode has 30') so I thought it might be a good addition. I bought it with intentions of immediately adding it to my Danforth's rode, but didn't, and sort of forgot about it.
Just now I went outside and noticed the pail of chain sitting next to my trailer and took a look inside. I'd forgotten I'd also bought some snap and chain hooks to make up a tow chain for my truck. When I opened the pail, it was full to the brim with water, no room for another drop. The wonderment? Not a gram of rust in the entire pail, except for the tag that was bailing wire attached to the very end of the chain. Astounding! I have no idea how long the pail's been full of water, but I've had the chain for at least a year or more, and the last time I remember looking into the (dry) pail was before we launched SL last year. It's been at least several months full of water, and nothing, no corrosion, just some off-white slime on the chain and hooks. Just amazing.
Have you bought something whose quality surprised you?

After decades of buying a new PC every two years or so, due to needed upgrades, advancements in technology, changes in OS versions necessitating upgrade, or whatever reason....my iMac from August 2007 is about to turn 5. My MacBook Pro from Jun 2009 is now 3. Both run just as good and fast as day 1 and I have no need whatsoever to replace either one.
I got lucky with my latest Jeep. It's a 2009 Wrangler Sahara, my 2nd Wrangler. They're good vehicles to begin with....but sometimes you get that little gem that's better than all the others. Almost 3 years old, 21k miles on her....and she's as good as new. Beautiful, still tight (no rattles), plenty of power (where everyone complains about the 3.8, mine runs like a champ) and I've never had a single issue with her at all.
This spring I bought a 6hp Evenrude Fisherman from the early 80's ($100) for my RIB on a whim. I took it to my local motor guy and in his opinion, with basic maintenance this motor will go for another 30yrs.
I just bought a new main from Ballard Sails in Seattle.
It came with great features that I didn't spec like draft stripes, tells, custom battens with tension lines, and leech and foot tension adjusters. The price was great (I don't want to quote an exact price in case it was a fluke) and it was plotted in the US and sewn in Seattle. Based on the price I was expecting more of a budget sail, but I can't really think of much that they could add in features or construction quality to make it a better cruising sail.
It was a late due to a mistake on their part, but they made up for it with the quality of the sail. They also had good service and came down to the boat to check fit before it was finished and then again after I installed it.
Google TV is pretty amazing. Aggregates all your different media sources (Amazon, Netflix, Cable TV etc) into one guide, full qwerty keyboard with a mouse pad which serves as a universal remote and it makes your TV Into an Internet portal with Google chrome, youtube or wherever you want to go. Bought it for $79. LOVE IT.
