Has anyone a way to take slop out of the Rudder pintles that have wore the Gudgeon holes a little larger. I have read of brass shim inserts and redrilling the Gudgeons to compensate(?) but was hoping for something pre made rather than have something fabricated or have to replace entire assembly.
George - I had the same problem a couple of years ago. I drilled out the gudgeon holes so that they were circular again, bought a pair of brass bushings (from a hardware store) sized to fit, and then put a fender washing between the top pintle and the bushing. No slop now!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Derek
On Hey Jude the slop was getting very bad. TPO left the rudder to swing with the current, and I think that contributed to the wear.
Took the gudgeons off and to my local machine ship. Ol' Marv bored out the holes, machined top-hat shaped inserts about 1" long, pressed them in from the top, re-bored the proper diameter and said the boat will wear out before these will. Just oil them from time to time. Said he used valve guide stock. The pintles were worn too, but just in the spot where the old gudgeon touched. Since the pintles are much longer than the old surface, the new bearings have the whole length of the pintles to contact on.
$40, cheap.

I bought the J 24 pintles and gudgeons from west marine. They are fairly inexspensive and much stronger than the original Catalina set up. No slop in the rudder either. Check it out. Shawn Silmarillion
<font size=2><font face='Comic Sans MS'> Have you looked at the Catalina Direct Heavy Duty Bushed Gudgeons? They are ready made and are said to fit our rudders. I am thinking about using them just so the rudder doesn’t make so much noise at night.
