Just acquired a C25. I'd like to refinish the keel. My plan is to lower it as far as I can on the trailer using the threaded rod method described in this forum. Some questions:
I believe that the thread in question is 3/8 x 16. Can someone confirm?
Do I need to use stainless threaded rods or will cheep nickle plated threaded rods from Home Depot be good enough?
The keel is painted with bottom paint over rustoleum. I read that it's bad to breath bottom paint dust. Just how dangerous is this stuff? Is it enough to wear a good breathing mask or do I need to take the boat somewhere?
I can't verify the thread, but you could take one bolt out to see. Home Depot will be fine. The problem is copper and heavy metal toxicity. A good, snug fitting mask will suffice, but wear long sleeves and pants instead of shorts; a disposable coverall and hood is best. Use a chemical stripper first to avoid excessive sanding, but a lot depends on the kind of bottom paint that is on the keel.
