My sixteen year old Mainsail cover has some worn spots and definitely looks its age. I definitely need to replace it. Any comments about some of the on-line cover makers? Any recommendations for local folks in the Hingham, MA area? S/V Stardust 1996 C250 #215 -Will
Will, I have not personally purchased one so can't recommend. I am sure someone will chime in. However, not sure is you are familiar with one of our best options of this forum. Check out the "Search" function on the top right. Use the word, "mainsail cover" and you will see many links. Steve A
Check out www.sailrite.com. They have a wide range of products, including do-it-yourself kits, supplies, how-to videos and downloads. I just completed making a cover for my furler and mast for use when the mast is down. Used my wife's sewing machine on sawhorses in the garage, with Sunbrella material and supplies from Sailrite. Turned out great! Don
I'm somewhat particular, in that I prefer my mainsail cover be secured with twist lock fasteners (no velcro or zippers). Rather simple and relatively bullet proof.
There was a good thread on mainsail covers recently that pointed to a nice source of them on eBay. I bought the 11' cover from here: http://stores.ebay.com/THE-SAIL-COVER-STORE
It has a zipper around the mast, twist lock fasteners along the boom. It fits my tall rig C-25 pretty well, although the 12' one might be a little bit better. Since the C-250 and C-25 tall have almost the same main sail size I'd probably investigate both options. I have a new mainsail that is still very crisp, so it probably requires a little bigger bag than one that has been heavily used for a decade or two.
I bought my cover from the store on ebay, it fits well and is easy to use, I like the zipper at the mast. However, after one year of use I'm having the zipper restitched. I don't know if it's the Florida sun or use.
