would like to purchase trailer for my '86 catalina 25 swing keel. have never owned/used a trailer so any advise on type, size etc would be much appreciated.
search trailer for all sorts of topics in the past.
From what I understand without experience: dual axle with brakes. Boat plus equipment will reach toward 5500-6000lbs, add trailer weight for GVWR. Tow vehicle then becomes a critical piece of the puzzle as well.
Check for internal rust in the axels (Drill a small hole on the bottom side of the axel close to the wheel or ultrasonically if you have access to the equipment). The trailer I got with the boat looked OK but the inside of the axels were rusted and one broke off when turning to launch the boat. They were 3500 pound axels and a little bowed from the weight. I replaced them with 5200 pound axels, load range D tires and electric brakes on all four wheels. The trailer had been in salt water a couple of times, according to the PO The trailer is only 5 years old.
I have a C-25 fin keel trailer for sale in the Swap Meet section. If you are not going to do a lot of long distance towing and have a deep ramp or lift services available where you normally dock your boat, a fin keel trailer can make sense for a swing keel boat, particularly when it comes to working on the bottom. The trailer was made by Trail-Rite for the C-25. I used it with my swing keel C-25.
