We wanted a table that could be lowered to extend the V-Berth. Here`s what I came up with.

Joint Decision. (Sold)

Nicely done! I like to sleep in the V-berth so that would make a wonderfully large bed.

I'll probably build v2 next year. It's a pain to raise up and to lower, we have practiced enough, but still a pain.

Thinking along the lines of longer leafs.

Even wondered if using sky hooks would be better

When it's down, it's tooo long (ie. reaches too far aft) so it's a crawl to get out of the v-berth.

At least this version does not cause any banged heads when we wake up in the morning.

I prefer to sleep toes aft, but Peggy prefers toes forwards. She wins.

My original berth extension was just a sheet of ply with a slot cut so that it could slide from the v-berth aft and reach past the mast post. Worked well, but the original table caused several skull lumps.

The perfect table would be one which allowed easy extension of the v-berth, minimal skull cracking protrusions, solid table, storage, and easy to get around when retrieving something from the v-berth.

Paul,

If you want a smaller v-berth extension with no skull bumps, have you considered modifying the original table with leaves (like I did, below), and a separate (much smaller) extension for the v-berth? On my drop-leaf table, the forward part of the leaves are narrow enough that an extension would fit under them. Your previous extension might even work.

Rick, I kept track of your table mod as it progressed (would make a great Album! hint hint)

Even though we have a centerboard, the narrow table and longer leafs would allow for the old pull out extension.

There could even be some storage space below the center panel. Might be able to eliminate the legs by using storage that sat on top of the unused coffee table.

So a box for storage, center panel as the top, drop leafs that reach down to just above a pull out extension.

Meets all the criteria including the ease to deploy.

I had better start making some drawings.
