This boat just sold up on Lake Conroe which is about 30 miles north of Houston. Seems like a really low price for a '87 model in this good of condition. Didn't take long to sell it at this price!
Value is dependent on the local market. Without a trailer, that boat was priced to sell to a rather small pool of prospective buyers in the local market. If it had a trailer, the value would increase due to the trailer and the fact that it opens it up to a larger area of prospective buyers.
That is an '86, not an '87. For an '83-'86 generation boat with basic sails, no upgrades, and an older motor that seems like a reasonable price. My '84 was in similar appearing condition but with a brand new motor and I bought it for just over that price after they'd had it on craigslist for a couple of months.
I was planning to look at that boat as it was on my local lake but I found a little better deal in Austin. If anyone is in the market I suggest you keep an eye on CraigsList. With Travis being so low they are giving away some boats. I just picked up my '84 C-25 two weeks ago for $2400. It was in similar condition but came with a brand new (literally just a few hours) Nissan 8 hp 4-stroke. The guy advertised it as "Buy a new motor and get a free boat" which turned out to be true. I had to pay to ship it to Conroe but I still came out with a great deal and I found a fixed keel boat which I had been searching for.
Thanks Dave! I've been trying to absorb as much info as I can here as this is my first sailboat since sailing a Sunfish as a kid. Looking forward to joining the association soon!

Excellent and congratulations!
Your experience is virtually identical to mine. Nearly new outboard, excellent boat, $2,600.00.
It's hard to judge by looking at couple pics. To me seems the price was too low. However, what's the condition of the sails? motor? fiberglass: top and bottom, electrical and the list goes on. Back in 2008 I almost bought a boat that looked quite well in the pics and was amazing as per the PO. But once I went to take a look at it and take it for a test sail I've found: engine would start but on it's way out, lots of soft spots and cracks on top, sails were at the end of their life. And on top of that when we went for trail sail forestay snapped and we go de-masted. And on top of that once we got the engine going (inboard) it was pumping in more water into the boat than bilge pump could pump out.
From what was an awesome deal, turned out to be a disaster.
I'm planning on listing my boat by end of the month - but trust me... i won't be giving it away. I will help the Catalina 25 market... as if I won't get reasonable amount for it she will stay until the right buyer comes around. :-) on My boat I can sail through a storm and I will feel comfortable on it as I know she can handle it - it's just getting too small as I'm spending nearly every weekend on it and we're planning to relocate in Ontario further away from home (so longer stays aboard).
If your father finds something that he decides to ship I'd be happy to pass along the info for the guy who helped me. I got no less than four referrals from different sources and they all led back to the same guy. Fortunately he's based out of Austin which was convenient. Saw a decent looking Cat 27 for sale on CL in Corpus for $1900 but unfortunately I had just sealed the deal on my 25.
Ah, didn't read too closely since I'd already bought a boat and didn't see the missing motor. Good luck with the search and let me know if you need help with shipping.

Are there many sailboats? I used to powerboat up there for years but never really saw too many sailboats out on the lake.
We just got back from Lake Travis a couple of weeks ago and there are a LOT of power and sails boats for sale at low prices.

dmpilc - Thanks for the offer but I just shipped the boat a couple weeks ago! :-(
GaryB - I've had the boat out three times and each time we've seen a few (as in 2-4) other sailboats and LOTS of powerboats and skis. I'm hoping to join our local sailing club for my first race tonight. At the dinner Tuesday we had probably 25 people and a few nice boats including a J100.

No kidding! We were admiring a nice looking boat on a lift outside someone's house while cruising Saturday. Looked like a sleek rig with a blue hull...my favorite. Needless to say I was smitten when he pulled up to the marina for dinner Tuesday. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a tour as I had to leave early. The owner is working the next few weeks so hopefully that gives me a little time to learn how to race before he shows up and spanks everyone!
