Hello Forum My name is Duncan and i run a marine engineering company based in the UK. www.wetbristol.com I have seen that some of your user have been having problems with the reverse lock on the tohatsu 9.8 and 15 fourstrokes , I believe that i have found a solution to the problem .
Most of the newer fourstroke Tohatsu engines are exactly the same as the Mercury and Mariner engines , they share the same parts but the parts are manafactured in different places so the quality of the parts varies massively. The Tohatsu reverse lock spring is of a much lower quality than the Genuine Mercury/Mariner spring , we swopped the Tohatsu spring on a customers Outboard with the Mercury part number 24-42127. It has solved the reverse lock issues on all of the engines we have supplied , the spring cost is just £4.50 and takes about 1/2 an hour to exchange over we always used Quicksilver special lube 101 to lubricate the spring and we suggest that you use this with your engine rather than any other lube .
If you would like to view the pictures of the spring please follow the link below
Your Forum has proved to be very usefull to us in the past so we thought we would share some info with you to help your members out. Any feedbackon this is very much appreciated .
Since you have a solution for a Tohatsu issue.....I have an issue with my new Tohatsu SailPro 6HP......the friction lock on the back of the motor, that holds it in place when cruising along....doesn't seem to hold my motor well. It's screwed all the way down, but the motor will still move. It's as though the threads are just a bit too short?
Could you post up a picture of the engine and also the bracket ?? have had a few problems with a little piece of metal that the said screw tightens into , to solve it you have to split the bracket in half and re align the screw into the said piece this is to say it may not even be fitted correctly at factory, If it is brand new it should be a warranty claim with your Tohatsu dealer , Contact them ,part of there PDI is to check the Correct operation of the entire engines systems Please feel free to email me with pics i can then perhaps show you the parts in the parts diagrams

It's to increase the friction :) only. This is even stated in the owners manual. But Tohatsu USA does now offer a steering lock kit which completely locks the motor in place. They posted the following on their facebook profile about a year ago. Just keep in mind that once installed, you cannot use the motor to steer without removing it.
(copied/pasted from their facebook post): Now available....Steering Lock Kit for the 4 / 5 / 6 hp 4-stroke models.
Kit allows motor to be locked into a fixed, straight position to allow boat to be steered using the boat's rudder. Perfect for sailboaters that want to use their rudder to steer instead of the motor. Easily installs in just a few minutes. Kit includes locking bracket, all necessary hardware, and installation instructions.
Caution: Once installed, the motor is locked in place and the tiller handle cannot be used to steer the boat unless kit is removed.
Fits 4hp, 5hp & 6hp 4-stroke "B" & "C" models. Part # 3GR625000M and can be ordered through your local Tohatsu dealer (available in US & Canada only)
