I'm pretty much a newbie to sailing, and really to boating unless you count a 12' dingie. Last night I almost dropped the shackle pin from my firler into the drink while getting the headsail up and immediately realized that I probably need to build a small collection of spare parts. This is especially the case, as there is not a sailboat shop on my lake and the nearest West Marine or similar shop is close to two hours away...

So - What would you guys recommend as a good start towards a spare part inventory on the Catalina 250?

I keep a fishing tackle compartment type case on board. Extra cotter pins, extra circle pins, screws, bolts and nuts of various sizes. a few different size shackles, a couple extra turnbuckles. Extra light bulbs and a few different sizes of line in various lengths. Probably more stuff that I can't remember. All of my sail shackles are captive pin halyard type.

Much like Davy J, but I also have various gauge wire, splices, fuses and terminals. Sparkplugs and a ready to go fuel line are all I carry for the engine, but the less likely to be used items are in sealed containers in the bilge. Since my boat is so far from home, I also have to containers of items for projects tucked away. All of the common stuff fits in a 3 drawer tackle box with some items and the required small tools in the top.

I've got some spare shackles, cotter rings, cotter pins, clevis pins,... in my tool kit aboard my Eastern 27. Maybe it's finally time to cull the kit.

Nah.
I keep the shift knob from a 74 Alfa in my desk drawer; not because I might need it.

Thanks for the input. I am probably going to have a little online shopping spree within the next few weeks to start a small collection of parts. I am also going to inventory common sizes to make sure that I have the right tools onboard too. I pretty much did the same with my jeep and now carry enough tools to replace an axle on the trail. :-)

I'd keep a shear pin or two for the outboard. Lights, wire, crimp connectors, fuses, wire nuts for emergencies, wire ties, wood screws, jewelers screwdrivers, 4-way screwdriver with interchangeable bits and a set of nutdrivers, torx bits and small sockets.
If you search the forum you'll find a similar thread I started last year. We got some excellent and insightful listings from many member.

We probably err on the overprepared side. I have a divided tool box with bolts, nuts, cotter pins and rings, shackles, and other small hardware in common sizes for our boat. In doing projects on the boat over this year I've gotten a pretty good idea of the normal sizes of things that I'll need. When I'm buying bolts for a specific project I'll usually get a couple extra and throw them into that box. Other spare items include some snap shackle blocks, a 100' of 1/4" and 3/8" line, and items for upcoming projects like new gungeons and a second cabintop winch.

I carry tools in two tall orange tool boxes with waterproof/resistant seals around the edge. The tools that I use the most are a Lutz-style screwdriver with different inserts, a socket set (Lowes has some very good prices on these right now), crescent wrenches, a good knife, and a cordless drill (I also carry a spare battery for that). I also carry basic electrical tools. I do need to cull the kit sometime soon since our list of projects is shrinking, but right now we have a lot on the boat. It all lives under the rear dinette bench. Once I cull the list I should be able to get everything down to two tool boxes and gain storage space back on the boat.
