I would like to sail my C25 from the mainland to Key West. I have a lot of questions, probably some I don't know yet. Is a C25 big enough for this kind of sailing? Can it be done in day sails? What's the best route? Whens the best time of year? What are some of the common problems I can expect to encounter? I would really like to hear from anyone that's done this. Thanks.
Now if we're talking about Miami to Key West, then thats very doable.
We have cruised in our C250 WB from Biscayne Bay, outside to channel 5 then back to Biscayne Bay via the bay side.
Heading down to Key West would just take several weeks longer.
If I had the time, I would do that trip. There are lots of places to take a break both outside and on the inside.
If you planned on ducking in from the Ocean side to the Bay side, make sure you can drop the mast on the water as many of the cuts have low hanging obstructions, bridges, cables etc.
Also, look carefully at the flows, through many of the cuts can be 4+ knots, so timing is critical but not impossible.
Black point marina is a great place to start from. And for that trip it would be worth the annual fee, one long trip would cover it.
