Just won an auction on eBay for a mainsail cover for $70 including shipping. The construction looks great on their eBay Store page. It nomally goes for $145 Buy-It-Now but I guess the timing eas right and the color is "Toast" which I'm OK with as my old cover was DOA. The zipper failed and all the stitching is falling apart. I may replace the zipper and re-stitch it as a spare. http://myworld.ebay.com/boat-top-guy?_trksid=p2047675.l2559

Congrats Brian!
It's hard to find real deals on EBay and it sounds like you got a mainsail cover for not much more than the price of materials. I'm pricing out Sunbrella material to redo my interior cushions and I might need to take out a small loan for it!

I have a guy that does upholstery work on classic cars. He is doing my cushions but I'm not going with Sunbrella inside. He said the Sunbrella is $40/yd. and this other one is $25/yd and has a 10 yr. warranty. Just a thought. I contacted the guy that made the mainsail cover and he said he would do a tiller cover as well if I send him the dims.

Use it if you want, but Sunbrella really isn't necessary in the cabin. You really open the door to style and color by looking at heavy drapery and upholstery fabrics.

I just ordered a new main and cover from the same sail loft, locally. I brought in the original cover of some 30 years old for part measurement and part nostalgia, as all fasteners, fabric and every stitch, including the patch with their logo, was fully intact. The husband and wife team can be reached at Yager Sails.

I think $250 for the cover. Then a budget busting $1450 for an every option, offshore cloth, partial batten main he's convinced will keep me sailing if I get caught in a small craft advisory and cant motor because of outboard cavitation. It was beyond worth it to spend an afternoon in his loft designing the new sail and having him point out all the work over 30 years he's done to the old main.

Does anyone have the dimensions for the sail cover on a C250? Mine was attacked by birds and had to be disposed of.

Joelterry, I'm not sure of the measurements but I bought mine based on the boom length. I'll let you know how it fits next week when I launch Knot So Fast.

Try to figure out how to select a different color on the 12 foot from http://stores.ebay.com/THE-SAIL-COVER-STORE?_trksid=p4340.l2563 to pacific blue.

My decision was easy, I saw a sail cover for my main for $75 including shipping and then I had the same guy make me a tiller cover in the same. I asked him recently about a jib sock but he said no so I guess I'm on my own for that. I think I could make my own if I have to.

I just replaced the zipper on the front of mine and re-sewed all the stitching. Like new. That two umbrella covers and one umbrella later, my new machine just about paid for itself.....

Sam -

FYI, Sunbrella material is pretty cheap ($20-$25/yd.) I just bought 5 yards to make a jib sock. They ended up senting me 60" wide material instead of 46" for the same $$. What sewing machine did you get? I would be interested in getting something to sew it. Right now I have a friend that has a good machine.

I got my cover from here and was compleatly satisfied. I needed Royal Blue and gave him the measurements from my old Catalina cover. It was at my door in 5 days.

Thanks Scott - I checked them out for a jib sock but it would be about $200 so I went the homemade route. I will probably get a boom tent from them because their price is almost as good as I can make it (it takes about 7 yards of material).

Regards,

Islander - What did you pay for it? I priced one just now and ot was about $235 w/ shipping. I figured I could make one for $150 max. I'll definitely get my boom tent from them. $175 is a good price for the 8'x10', I'd pay that much for 7 yards of material.

For the standard rig With a RF I needed 28ft so I believe it was $237.75/with shipping. I don't sew but I can buy. If you can make it cheaper then all the better. I will say this, The material they use is lighter and smoother than Sunbrella. Almost like a heaver grade sail cloth. Sunbrella might be to coarse and could possibly chafe your sail. I say might because I really don't know. I also chose white to reflect any heat. You also will need a spare halyard to hoist it. Takes me 6min. to put on and 2min. to take off. I doubt I will ever buy a sail with a UV cover again. Makes the sail heavy and degrades long before the sail does. My opinion.

Scott - All good points. The material I got is pretty heavy so I may save it for a boom tent and buy the light-weight stuff for the sock. The light-weight stuff is much cheaper but should do the job. I was thinking about buying a boom tent anyway so it should work out well. The boom tent I was looking at was about $150 for the 8'x10' so the 5 yards (60" wide) I have will work with a little to spare.

Thanks,

I have a boom tent that the PO made or bought but it came with the boat. The first year I tried it I was really disappointed. If your intentions are to drape it over the boom and tie the sides to the stanchions or life line it makes sitting in the cockpit difficult. The angle that the tent is on will be hitting you in the head. I would first tie a line over the boom and then to the lifeline or stanchions and then imagine the tent being there or use a cheap blue poly tarp first then decide if it will suit your needs. I'm sorry but I never know if I'm talking to Brian or Joanne when it comes to you guys

Hi Scott - It is always Brian on this forum. Thanks for the input. I was thinking that I might use a few pieces if 1"PVC piping on the fore and aft edges for support that I could cable up to the mast and backstay for the headroom issue. We'll use it when we camp out for the night on the lake. Just a little project for the summer when not sailing.

Thanks again,
