Its been an real warm summer here in New England. I havent sailed as much as I would like (1 day sail a week?). I did a quick bottom paint job with el cheapo bottom paint at the beginning of the season....the result has been alot of growth and scum on my hull, as well as some exposed areas of hull. I dove on it once about a month ago and hand scrubbed it (not fun). It needs it again but the season is short. Question - if a nice sail was getting me 5knots, how much slower can I expect with a scummy bottom?
(I was out last nite with just the small jenny up, 8 knots of wind, I felt like I was in irons!)
A foul bottom affects every aspect of the boat's performance. It not only reduces boat speed, but it also degrades it's ability to sail to windward, and to tack, and the boat doesn't coast as far. It's hard to estimate the amount of speed loss, because it depends on how bad it is. On the forum, we have seen some bottoms that looked so foul that it was questionable as to whether the boat could sail to windward at all. Yours doesn't sound that bad, but it's probably not up to par. We're so late in the season that I'd scrub it and get by until spring, and then give it a good cleaning and sanding and fresh coat of antifouling. I store my boat on the hard every winter, so I only put one coat of good quality ablative paint on it each year.
...and I'd use (and do use) a dual-biocide paint like WM's PCA Gold, which I believe is re-branded Pettit Ultima SR-40. It does a pretty good job of preventing slime, grass, etc. It's often on sale for a pretty good price (all things being relative) around March.
My boat had a filthy bottom after two POs who never took care of it for years and years (maybe up to 10).
When I cleaned off the scum and resurfaced the bottom this spring, I noticed a night and day difference, 100% more speed and much better pointing.
Old sailors kept telling me that my problem was a dirty bottom, but until I experienced the difference for myself, I never would have guessed the difference.
Of course, you're only talking about a season's worth of grime, so I second the other posters and say don't worry about it until next spring.
Hired a local kid who dives and cleans bottoms for $5/ft,his repuation's pretty good......figure for $125, thats about the price of a gal of anti-fouling. I have about a month left and want to enjoy it......maybe it will be less of a hassle power washing it when I haul it next month!
$5 a foot? I have used the same person to clean my bottom every month for 6 years now. He is a professional bottom cleaner and he charged me $25 for the boat when he first started. Bumped up to $30 now. Cleaning it monthly allowed the bottom paint to last 5 years. It takes him about 20 minutes to clean the bottom.
this is on/at my mooring, so it requires him to have a boat and dive gear/tanks. Last one I saw was a three person job. At least an hour. Doesnt seem bad to me
