Has anyone seen the shelves behind the settees converted to cabinets? I'm imagining nice teak cabinets with drop down doors.

I think I saw someone did sliding doors with white faces, but I did not like that as much.

I've been looking at a lot of other boats as we're looking to upgrade to something a little bit larger.

The sliding door approach is the normal one that I've seen on 29-32' cruisers. It gives you good access without blocking anything when the doors are open.

The C-25 shelves are so shallow that I'm not sure it is worth the hassle unless you do a larger modification that also makes them bigger. With a slightly different mold Catalina could have made the shelves recess down below the backs of the seats and provided much more useful storage space. The larger boats that we've been looking at typically have storage area that is closer to 10" deep and where the shelf does sit down a little lower behind the settees, giving a much larger volume of storage.

On our boat I've been experimenting with making a bungie net for that space. It doesn't provide the clean look of doors, but it makes the most of the limited volume and makes it easy to stow and grab items from that area.

If you did want doors I'd make sliding ones out of 1/4" plywood with a nice finish on them. Instead of handles put small 3/4" holes that you can stick a finger into to open them.

I think that thread for for a different alternative, which is putting storage in behind the seat backs. I read Seth's post as asking about making better storage using the narrow shelves above the seats.

Another option to increasing shelf space for things like spices, magazines, books, etc is to install shelves behind where the table stores for those hulls with the table against the bulkhead. I installed shelves with removable front rails (they slide up to remove) as part of a hinged table design. Further details on my website.

I agree that for teh size of shelves, it would be a lot of work to put doors on them, and I kindof like the arrangement as-is.

its not a neat and clean approac - everyone can see your stuff, but it works great for storing a lot of teh small stuff that would be difficult to find in the bottom of a drawer or bag. We put things likebattens and bungies there, and can wedge in our lanterns and bug sprays.

Since the shelves are tapered, everythign gets sorted by size. And what is most surprising is that the pinrails do a great job of holding all our stuff in place. We rarely have stuff fall out of there - even in pretty extreme conditions.

On the other side we keep long, skinny stuff like boat hooks, rolled charts, etc.

Those pinrails are one of the things I would keep as-is on our boat. But I'd really like to build a cabinet to go in above the head, which is a similar project to your cupboard doors over the settees - just a different sort of chair...

Our 1984 doesn't have the pinrails. Anything that you put on those shelves ends up on the floor within a couple of tacks.

Our boat did not have the pin rails when we bought it. I added them to the existing teak rail and the additional height keeps things in the shelf. I think the rails I bought were out of an O’day and made a good fit with some trimming to size. Also, someone told me that Home Depot sells them, probably not teak.
