Are there any members out there that have taken the ASA Certification courses? I'm thinking about doing Basic Keelboat this winter in Key West. Can anyone give a suggestion on a school based on their experiences or ones to stay away from? I think Basic Keelboat 101 is 3 Days.
Thanks,

I can't help you with that, but I'd like to hear your thoughts once you do. I've debated taking the slew of courses even though I've sailed for years. I don't think, and never have, that I am an expert, so I figure I can always stand to learn new stuff.
Plus I'd like to get the offshore course, cause I am very rusty.
We're spoiled and 2 of our ASA instructors are sail club members and the local ASA chapter is about 1/4 mile from our club right on the lake. Great guys by the way, in fact their keelboat trainer is the same model as my old boat, a Capri 22!

The Colgate school on Captiva Island is at a spectacular location, and would be my first choice of locations. In fact, I love that area so much that I named my C25 and my C&C 35 "Captiva Wind."
May be a little anti-climactic but there are two ASA certified schools in CT. Sound Sailing School - Norwalk and Mystic. Might be good to get started sooner than later and follow up over the winter with more advanced courses at Captiva as Steve suggests.
I have taken ASA coastal cruising and navigation. Found them to be very worthwhile. I will be taking the advanced cruising and another navigation course next Fall. The school was San Juan Sailing in Bellingham, WA and the instructor was excellent. Boat was well maintained and provisioned.

Really check out the school and the boats used. Each of these schools are independent so experiences may vary.
