Went down to the boat yesterday, and the Catalina 27 that used to be next to us moved about 10 slips away to a downstream slip (same as us, makes it usually easier to land). So now we have a Ranger 24 next to us, which gives us almost 3' of room between our boats instead of the span-with-your-foot room we used to have. Much nicer, plus they've got three good sized fenders down instead of the Catalina 27's single small one.

And across from us on the shore side of the dock is this nice little cat boat:

I'm not sure why he's got his mast down, there's no need for it to get into the slip. Maybe he just motored over from the launch at Alki or his last moorage. Anyway, nice little addition to the marina.

The marina has kicked out or forced people to clean up about half a dozen derelict boats. Three of them are in the yard somewhere, a fourth was just kicked out, likely for being in arrears, and another Hunter 27 was bought from the estate of a guy who died a couple of years ago by one of the denizens of the marina & he's bringing it back to life. It's nice to see that most of our boats are in pretty good repair and actually get used, and it's also nice to see nice new boats showing up.

Cute little cat--I haven't seen one quite like it. The hard chines and cabin trunk make me think it could be home-built out of plywood. Is it about 16'?

16' seems about right. It's nicely turned out, but I agree, it could be home built.

Just returned from 3 wks in Seattle visiting my daughter and grand daughters (celebrated #2's 2nd). I now have a much better feeling for the Elliott Bay traffic you often note (tugs, container and cruise ships, ferries of all sizes, ...) the Alki, and of course the Ballard locks, beach, the Center for Wooden Boats.... Wonderful area. I wanted to hit you and Alex up for a cup of Tulley's but just not enough time in the day.

BTW...congrats on the employment (different thread). I can appreciate the thrill....Still floundering on this side of the great divide. I was fired in the first five minutes of my first job out of school many years back following a presidential election and "reprioritization" ....never imagined it would be a life long curse though.

Gerry, thanks for that. It's a job I'd have never applied for, but they saw my resume in a batch from the unemployment office's veteran coordinator guy and wanted to talk to me. I think they were interested in my experience at my last job getting hardware to talk to software. It's my first time being hired as a "developer" and honestly I'm a bit anxious about it as I don't really think of myself as a dev, but we'll see. I was very-very upfront about my code writing skills but they still offered me the job, so we'll see how that goes. I know what you mean about a life long curse, I've never worked anywhere longer than five years in my entire life and I've been laid off half a dozen times in the past dozen years or so.

It's too bad we couldn't have met up, I've enjoyed meeting everyone of the folks who've contacted me through the forum, but can certainly understand wanting to spend time with family. The Ballard locks are one of our favorite places to take people who are visiting, plus there's decent seafood available all around Ballard.

Anyone who isn't in the NW probably won't recognize that as a Ranger. It is a "Kent Ranger" that was made in Kent, WA, and has nothing to do with the Gary Mull Ranger's. Specs are here: http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=399

It's a much smaller boat than a Catalina 25, despite only being one foot shorter. There used to be one moored across the dock from my Catalina 25. When it moved out an even smaller Ranger 22 (Gary Mull) moved into it's slip. An interesting feature of the Kent Ranger 24 is that it has a well for the outboard that is more or less in the center of the cockpit.

The moorage for my new Pearson 28-2 is at Shilshole. It's fun being down there with over 1000 other sailboats of nearly every make and model. I've enjoyed walking the docks and seeing what was there.

That cat is cute, it reminds me of a cat rigged West Wight Potter that cross bread with a Thunderbird.

Congrats on the new job!

Thanks Alex, I didn't realize there was a distinction. I remember really wanting a Ranger 22 about 15 years ago and didn't know this 24 was from a different manufacturer.

Here's another picture of it showing some of the cockpit, but not the outboard well:

It looks like all the lines are nearly new and it's (currently) very clean. Unfortunately that won't last long with the cement plants on either side of the marina. It's a constant chore to keep the black dust from settling into every little nook & cranny. Plus we've had very little rain this summer so, that contributes to the amount of dust collecting. When I rinsed SL down this past time, the water was basically black running off of the horizontal surfaces. Very annoying.

I haven't met the owners yet, but hope to soon.

Those fenders between your boats won't do much good unless you RAISE them to gunwhale level. As hung, they're only good for the dock side.
