I am picking up my first boat a 97 wing keel at the end of the month and will be towing it with my 2006 Toyota Tundra. It has the 282 HP V8 and transmission cooler (towing package). It has a 6900 lb towing capacity so I have figured that the weight of the boat + trailer will be just slightly less than that.

I will be towing from Sacramento to Ashland up and over the Siskiyou pass which is about 5000 ft. pass and am not worried but want to maximize my smooth trip.

The trailer of "Mischief" is a dual axle 4 wheel drum w/ surge brakes trailer. It looks to be in great shape.

I am thinking of installing air shocks on my truck but am also worried about sway.

What can people tell me about sway or this set up? Do you recommend air shocks? Will they minimize sway? What mods can you do with surge brakes to make the haul safer.

I've driven big rigs and am familiar with how dangerous and hard to stop sway can be. Going slow is the best answer.

Finally, I don't plan on doing this trip again for a while and my local lake is about 30 miles away. However, I would like to trailer this boat eventually and any mod I do would be done for the long term.

Thanks

I really don't think you should have any problems. The longer wheelbase should make it more stable than my Grand Cherokee, especially if it has electronic sway control, and I tow very comfortably at a little over 60 mph. My G.C. does have a little more power, 305 hp and 334 ft./lbs. torque, and the 5000 ft. pass may be a little tedious, but I wouldn't worry about a one-time shot. As you know, going down is the tricky part; be cautious if you don't have 4 wheel disk brakes. I don't have air shocks and wouldn't bother if the rig sits level. Don't mess with the brakes if they work.
