What a mess!

We've heard from "Viper" Glenn in PA, and "Voyager" Bruce in CT... Any news others in Sandy's path of terror? (I suspect some folks have more important things on their minds than this forum right now!)

Going to Knot So Fast today to drop the mast and prep her for haul out. I'll check out the marina for damage but the lake is very sheltered and about 50 miles from the coast. During the storm, my boat was sitting as nice as can be on the dock as the winds came from the North. Candlewood is a man-made lake that was formed bu flooding the valley in the 30's. It sits down low with hills surrounding it. It makes for a nice safe-haven in a storm but gets tricky to sail. Every day I went out this year was a new experience with many combinations of wind direction and strength. The lake is about 13 miles long but only 1 1/2 miles wide at the widest point.

If you want to link to google maps, it's best to use the short url.

here's that same url in the short version.
http://goo.gl/maps/Mt9GD

I am surprised that we have no pics in the gallery yet from up North.

Another way to provide a link is to:
1. Switch the Format Mode (above the Message box) to Prompt.
2. In your message, highlight some text that is descriptive of your link.
3. Click
4. Paste the URL into the text box that pops up.

The text you selected will be highlighted as a link to that URL, like this. It's quick, easy, and doesn't widen the whole thread off our screens (which happens sometimes).

Paul, the folks who have the best pictures might not have time or electricity to post them here. I hope we start hearing from a few... NJ, for one, is a real mess.

Thanks Dave,
A guest at our Rotary club this week had a boat in NJ, but no longer knew where it was located

But as others have said on the forum... a Privileged Problem, there are folks with much more pressing issues.

Just for the record, "Viper" is in Cleveland,Ohio. That's a marina on Lake Erie. Strange place for hurricane damage!

In my part of the North Coast, we had electricity restored Thursday night and internet back this morning. Still haven't checked on Kaija. She's on the hard 60 miles further west with her beam to the north surrounded by other boats on boat stands. I'll check tomorrow or Monday but since I haven't heard from the marina, I'll assume no news is good news.

As I mentioned in the other thread - I am feeling VERY fortunate. Slainte, just 7 miles from the devastation that we've all seen in Seaside Heights, NJ, has survived seemingly without incident. I've not been onboard as the docks were submerged when I was there on Tuesday. She was, however, floating nicely on her lines - maybe a bit bow down - likely from the anchor locker filled with water.

I often think about relocating to a marina that has closer access to the Bay. After this storm, I'm loving my location. Yes - I have to motor for about a mile before I can drop my keel and set my sails. Seems like a decent bargain now!

I am in the Poconos of Pa. We are more about power outages and droves of people coming from NY and NJ to get to us where then can find a few gas staitions open. I am at an elevation of 2000 FEET and we saw gusts to 60+ but then that is non uncommon for us. We had power back here in like 20 hours. I pulled my boat :-(
2 weeks ago, so it was on the hard here. Nothing of consequence fell on it.

Work is 50 miles east of my home, near delaware water gap between pa and NJ. We just got power Friday. Long lines at the few open fuel pumps. NJ is starting to open a few gas staitions and they are forcing odd and even days for getting fuel. Generators are flying off shelvez still and everyone here is talking whole house generators.

My in laws are further east from work even and they have power just today.

We are fortunate, and we know it. The east coast though is just a mess. Even with that my cousin near the Jersey shore just got power today as well. There are power company crew from as far as GA and MI here to help.

As bad as things are/were things are slowly returning to normal again. Sadly it appears winter has decided to set in and now they are talking nor'easter mid next week.

I heard 2 days ago that a convoy of electric repair trucks from Alabama were turned back in New Jersey.
Reason: they weren't union employees! Talk about stupid! I wonder how many people are still without power because of that?

There was 3 feet of water in the boat yards's parking lot...that's about 7' above the highest tide...they came within inches of the floating docks rising past their posts, but it didn't come to that. At home, the water came to withing 2" of our front door threshold - the stoop was submerged - but didn't make it in.

I was incensed when I read about the same story, but it turns out to be largely untrue. One crew turned themselves around at a staging area in VA due to confusion about union requirements and the paperwork required, and reports of other crews being denied turned out to be false. The loss of one crew wouldn't seem to be a large deal in the grand scheme of things.

One of the guys on my team lives on the banks of the Navesink River near Sandy Hook NJ. He and his family were fine in the house (no flooding or storm damage), but they had no power even though they had a generator, couldn't get gas. And they were challenged to get out for food. So, since school was closed last week and will probably be closed all through this one, he and his family locked the door and headed up to his cabin in Vermont.
Once he got there he said they had plenty of power, all the gas they could fill up and as much food as they needed.
I told him he could do conference calls with his colleagues and customers so long as the work gets done, we're all good.
Funny thing, he'll get more done in VT than he could in NJ by a long shot.
