I tried this during our big club race. A Mark boat placed 10 12" fun noodles throughout the race course. Each noodle had a Aquafina bottle filled with sand tied to one end. Coax cable, RG58 or 59, formed a loop at the top of the noodle. With this setup the noodles stayed vertical throughout the race. One noodle was designated the grand prize noodle ($50 gift certificate to a local restaurant) the the remaining nine noodles could be redeemed for glass mugs with our Burgee, year and race name laser etched into it. Each boat was going to be limited to one noodle. The orginal thought was that the racers would come swooping by and use their boathook poles to grab the noodle by the loop but this proved pretty difficult. Races soon learned that it was easier to drag the boathook underneath the noodle and grab the line between the noodle and bottle. One racer had a fishnet. Some of our hardcore serious racers deviated from their course in order to grab a noodle. Several boats that were in the back of the pack went after the noodles. After three races we had 3 noodles unclaimed. The Mark boat took those three and placed them in the path back to the Marina. Overall it was a success, cost to fab the noodles was low and threw a new fun wrinkle into a race
