Today's the last race of our season (Jan thru Nov), I am within a half point of first place behind the ODay 32. He's won two years in a row so someone needs to knock him off. We're trying a staggered start for this race, I start in the group before him, but they're adjusting the times before applying our unique handicap. Need to finish, after handicap 3-4 places in front of him, if we have our normal >17 boats I have a chance (maybe Confetti can keep him busy )...expecting around 15 knots winds, temp in the mid 70s, a great day for a sail, either way. Hope I can do the C25 proud...
Hi Tom, At least you get to race... Today was the first day of our big Wurstfest Regatta and I was supposed to helm a Precision 23. We went to the slip and checked the wind - it was blowing a steady 25 knots with horrible gusts, expected to build during the afternoon. Discretion got the better part of valor and we decided to stay in the marina!
I want to thank DaveR for making that hour drive every month this past year to crew. We had lighter winds than called for which was perfect for Island Time. The RC set up a great course, almost seven miles long. After a bad start, we made up an incrediable amount of time, started last in our group, but by the first mark we passed three out of four boats in our group. An Albin 30, Irwin 30' and a Hunter 28.5, only a Catalina 27 left to pass. We passed the C27 and a boat from the first group (first group started 15 minutes before we did) before the second mark. By the time we rounded the second to last mark only one boat was in front of us, a Hunter 26.5. This was the Hunter's first race so they put him in with the first group, boat sailed well and I wasn't able to catch him. Crossed the line second, but took sixth after handicap, the ODay 32 had a good day and finish third with handicap, so he will take the year trophy, I should finish second or third for the year. Confetti took first for the day, so the C25s held their own again.
Derek, Chuck mentioned he ended up with your sails, he really didn't need help. hope the wind settles down and you get out this weekend...let me know what you think of the Precision, the Marina is buying two 18's for a rental fleet. I wanted C-18's but Catalina just had a big price increase and the Air Force went with the less expensive Precisions.
Yeah what a day we had! The worst thing we did is when I veered off course for a couple secs while adjusting the traveler. But nobody around us had anything for us. Had a great time (as always), thanks for having me Tom!
Hi Tom, The Precision 23 is a good boat and can sail to its numbers. My only experience with an 18 was when we sailed 17 miles together with one from Sandusky Bay to Put-In-Bay. In the open water the wind picked up to 17-20k and the 18 had to drop his jib. I suspect that the 18 is a little tender! BTW at the Wurstfest Regatta on Canyon Lake yesterday there was carnage. One dismasting, one capsize, one boat finished on the rocks and a C22 got holed when forced against the breakwater. I don't have any other details. But I'm sure glad that we passed on the races.

Congrats to Tom and crew for sailing really well yesterday!!! The wind started out very slightly west of north and shifted about 45-50 degrees to the east midway in the race. Never had a true beat, but did end up having a fetch for the first and 4th legs.
Our club handicapping system is "interesting". The goal is to allow everyone a chance to do well, which is a worthy goal IMHO to help draw out non racers. But it also means if you do well, then the next race you get hammered by a handicap change proportional to how well you did, so someone else can do good. And if you come in at the back of the pack you get a proportionally "better" handicap for the next race. So, it does have the effect of mixing things up for the results, which is what it was intended to do.
The staggered start was kind of like a rabbit start, but instead of each boat starting at a unique time associated with their handicap, and then have it as a "first to finish wins, it was simply three independant starts 15 minutes apart so that all the boats would be around each other at some point the race. I really liked it (at least till I got ganged up on to block me from passing and that allowed the ODay32 to pass me just before the finish line!!<grin>. It was good fun for everyone and absolutely beautiful weather for an afternoon of sailing!!
