Unless something happens to derail us, a week from today and I'm off to Ft. Walton Beach for the C-22 Nationals. My first time. I'll be crewing with my friend, Don. He just turned 70, and I'm 63. We may have a third crew going with us. Except for the 8 hour drive each way, it should be a lot of fun. Wish us luck, and maybe say a prayer for us! Don's brother is bringing his fifth wheel trailer for our lodging accommodations.

Good luck David. When Vern Marion and I won the Great Salt Lake Nationals we were the oldest crew in the race! So you have a tradition to maintain! Watch out for "Calypso" and the old guy in the cowboy hat (Gene Ferguson)
We had a great week at Ft. Walton Yacht Club. Met the new owner of C-25 "Pearl", too. Monday's races were abandoned due to weather, so we sailed 3 races on Tues. and Wed. each to catch up. There were 15 boats each in the gold and silver classes (we sailed in silver). We finished 4, 4, & 5 on Tues. and 1,7,7 on Wed. Thank goodness for the first place finish on Wed! We went into Thurs. in 4th place, 3 points behind the third place boat and 2 points in front of the fifth place boat. Winds Tues. and Wed. were 8-12 gusting to 15 and Thurs. was 12-15 gusting to 18-20. We were going to be in 4th place again until the 3rd place boat lost their headsail - the grommet pulled out of the sail. They finished 6 places behind us and we prevailed in a photo finish with the 5th place boat, so we finished 3rd overall. It was my intention to end the week in the top third of the fleet, so we were very happy with the third place standing. All in all, it was a great week! There is a video of the Wed. race starts at the C-22 National Association web site. We were in the boat named Plan-B, bow #60. https://www.catalina22.org/
You are not too far off the mark. I would bet that the average age of the racers was well over 40, and most of the skippers over 50. Our yacht club is experiencing the same thing, aging members and very few new younger boat-owner members. I suppose the economy is mostly to blame. Overall, our membership is growing (50 new members so far this year), due mainly to our "Learning At The Helm" program (LATH), a program in which members volunteer to take folks out on their boats and teach them to sail, but most of the new members are not boat owners. They join initially to participate in the LATH program, and sign up for the Club Boat Program (we also have 5 boats that members an qualify to take out). We also have a certified instructor/member who teaches the US Sailing Basic Keelboat course.
