We had a terrible start. Probably 3rd to last across the line for our fleet (race committee placed the start in a wind shadow, argh)...
Here we are catching up to my good friend in his S2 JUST after the start.
Just a little bit of wind:
It was a fun race:
So we caught up to the lead boat, a J/24 (also a good friend who crewed for me for the first race of the last season, met him on Sailing A, before I met him in person - happened to be a fellow club member).
When we finally got inside him at the mark (actually an island), we managed to round the island JUST to hear the race committee calling down to say they were considering calling the race because the first boats hadn't cleared the first mark by 2:30 (yep it was REALLY light winds). Sadly we were at 5 knots boat speed when they called it. and 15 minutes behind that number. Race committee could have moved the finish up though (and did not).
They scored the race as there were several people UNHAPPY about them calling the race (our schedule is quite tight). There was some debate over calling it, while we were still racing. So we continued to race.
Many of the fastest boats caught us on a lucky set of winds, the 3 fastest boats caught up to us nearly at the finish. I had a J/24 pass WELL before us (like 15 minutes)... a second J/24 was 4 minutes ahead of us... then an S2 was maybe 30 seconds. However they all OWE us time. We figure actual corrected times we were second overall. The distance between US and the next set of boats was huge.
I'll repost here if they put out results, not that it'd matter UGH! theres HOURS of my life gone... but it was still fun.
OH and when we threw the spinnaker (because for once we COULD)... we walked away from the fleet.
Oh, and get this picture... We have a staggered start... cruisers first, then more serious cruisers who race... then racing boats... A club member just bought a B25 (very fast)... it's the blue boat on the horizon in this picture... Yeah he was BEHIND us most of the race (thank god, that boat is REALLY fast).
