I'm not talking about a new handheld GPS or a new inflatable PFD - Those would be gifts for you. How about for your boat ?

Last winter, I delayed getting the stays replaced and my dough went for blister repairs and waterproofing. So, I decided this year to go for standing rigging replacement. Atlantic Riggers out of Annapolis have made up the rigging in their shop to save time and schedule is to do the install last week of November with my boat in it's slip.

I did my best to help the economy these past 9-10 months !!

Island Time could use a new mast, standing rigging, running rigging, bow pulpit, anchor light, nav lights...hopefully she gets everything she needs.

JD is going to show off her birthday suit as she gets fitted for new canvas in the next couple of weeks: Bimini, Boom Tent, Companionway cover. Being made by Blue Water Canvas & Upholstery Inc. They are a really busy shop, but we're at the top of the job list as promised when we placed the order 9 weeks ago.

Her outboard got a new hat from Bass Pro Shops, hopefully that will keep her engine cooler during her time on the trailer.

But her best gift is to be out on the water over the New Years Eve Weekend!!!

Free Spirit just got some new cabinet drawers installed. The rest of the interior LED lights have arrived, should get installed today or tomorrow. Her oil and filter just got changed. A new back-up anchor is in-route as well as a new cutlass bearing. Also, I have been mainsail shopping. Last year she got a new speed indicator and teak parts.

My mainsail is theoretically 13 years old, but the boat wasn't used for at least 3 years (apparently stored off the boom) so it's actually in pretty good shape. So we've sent it off for the Sailcare treatment, including re-resining (15% off until end of Nov.).

I'm also planning to buy a new C-250 logo for the mainsail cover.

The last thing I'm considering may belong in your "gifts for me" category. It's a wireless remote for the autopilot. There were several times last year when due to inclement/cold weather or napping crew that I would have liked to be able to sit down low in the companionway (with my head up high enough to maintain a watch) and control the cabintop winches from there. The remote would allow me to auto-tack from that forward position and adjust the genoa sheets myself, as well as doing general steering from that location (or from either catbird seat). I used WM's 15% off coupon to order it yesterday, which gives me about a week to decide whether I actually want to pick it up. It's an expensive toy that I don't really need, but it intrigues me.

My boat received it's gifts early !

Both batteries replaced with West Marine/Sea Volt AGM Group 34s. (Almost identical size as Group 25s but slightly shorter height) This time around, I hooked up the battery voltage sensing lines and switched to the AGM setting on my solar panel controller. So far, so good - They are fully charged. ($199 for one bought originally as a backup for home sump pump before hurricane hit..but was not used. Then decided to buy a 2nd one and replace 8 yr old batteries onboard that had maybe a yr left to them. 2nd battery on sale ~ $180.)

Atlantic Outriggers came down to my boat last week and replaced all my standing rigging while boat was in slip with mast remaining up. Also replaced the lower mast internal halyard blocks. ~ $1900 (includes travel charge from Annapolis)

JD's new blues should be here this week/next. The new bimini will be 2" shorter so that there is no touching the boom and the new boom tent will be nearly 2' longer and wider at the front so that it covers the pop top windows.

She is looking brighter with a new LED Galley light and just had a new fan installed in her Dehumidifier. New Spreader boots are in the mail.

Me? I'm getting a new pair of Nikon Ocean Pro Binocs with compass ... big WoHoooo!

(Never did understand why they (plural) are referred to as a 'Pair of Binoculars'

Paul.

The list seems to grow weekly:

New Plastimo compass

New Standard Horizon VHF (w/ DSC & AIS)
Gotta buy the GPS unit to go with

New LED light for the galley (leftover from last year's worklist)

Probably also getting new cabin lights:
2 LED gooseneck, red/white, (reading lights at fwd
end of each bench) (I hate 'settee')
1 fluorescent overhead (over the table)

Also upgrading my engine to a 4 stroke Tohatsu/Nissan.

It's gonna be a good season!

Not sure if you want a handheld GPS, or chartplotter. But if you already have those things and just want to feed NMEA data to the radio, this one worked great for me for only $65. You need to be a little handy with wiring the 5v supply power and the data wires, but it's extremely reliable and never crashes. I wanted to be sure the radio would always get GPS data even if my computer crashes, shuts down, etc.

You can also splice additional wires to feed the data to a PC-based chartplotter, so you'll get your own location and AIS targets on the same screen. It's much nicer looking than the radio's very rudimentary target display. Here's a link to my setup. I decided to do the communications to the PC chartplotter wirelessly via Bluetooth.

Nothing fancy this year, a used compass, new halyard line and having the depth sounder repaired.....and don't forget the new boat hooks. We bought this boat in August/September and have repaired some very minor stuff but I think she is happy just being used again, it sat for a year collecting dust and a few barnacles.

Sorry, I'm not in that business. But I'm happy to share my plans with others who want to try to do something similar.

We got our mainsail back from Sailcare last week, and it looks great!

I also got down to the boat today to temporarily connect and test out the Raymarine S100 autopilot remote control. It seems to work great, though without the boat in the water I can't really test it in actual use. However, frivolous as it is, I think I am going to keep it. I'll be able to steer the boat from anywhere - catbird seats, bow, or even down in the cabin (keeping watch through the front windows, which I verified is possible last summer).

With that test out of the way, I removed the battery for storage/float charge at my home. But we're almost halfway through the off-season. Can't wait to get back out there!

Thanks T5, I did see your post on SailNet (I post there under the same moniker as I do here) and have that GPS on my Amazon wish list. I will also be using a Windows netbook as my Chartplotter for the foreseeable future so having an 'always on' backup will give me peace of mind.

I paid my club fees for 2013 even though there is no water in the harbor and probably won't be for a couple years. Merry Christmas boat.

for the boat: new bottom paint (Micron 66), replacement seacocks, replacing some standing rigging, LED nav lights.

for me: new roller furler (Hood Seafurl 5, replacing a nearly 30 year old Hood 810) and new GPS.

Haul out is scheduled for Friday so that I can do some of this work over the weekend (the boat yard is doing the bottom paint and furler install).

Nothing new for the boat this year, I do have halyard clutches yet to be installed; new granddaughter (1 yr old) got most of the goodies this year! They spent Christmas with us and we had a blast!

With Christmas over, now it will be my birthday (end of the year).
This Saturday I think I'm going to take a ride to Defender to get some bottom paint for Passage, and whatever other odds and ends strike my fancy.
Way I figure, my mastercard bill is so high now, another few pings ain't gonna make a whole lotta difference! OY!
