13 out of 20 boats are still in the race... boats are spread over a distance spanning the width of our continent. For safety sake the thirteen 60 footers are forced to sail further north due to ice.
Henk This is a great post! My wife and I watched the kickoff of the race on "MainSail" on CNN-I two weeks ago and there was a lot of speculation on who would start, who would finish, and whether anybody would not "make it". They spotlighted MACIF with François Gabart (2nd place) as the young turk and Gamesa with Mike Golding as a tough guy who's going to tough it out (6th place). It seems that 7 dropped out including the only female sailor: Savéol with Samantha Davies. Any indications whether they've had rig failures? The boats are extremely fast, yet extremely fragile. When you're talking about the Southern Ocean, the word Fragile does not go with 20m breakers! Seems they're having a stretch of nice weather at the moment. 16 kt gusting to 20 and itty bitty 2.5m waves (8.5')!
There has been at least one dismastingm the girl sailor, I think a keel fell off and another guy hit a fishing trawler during a ten minute nap. I'm rooting for Alex Thompson in Hugo Boss. You can find lots of good Vendee Globe stuff on youtube.
According to the recent Mainsail episode, about 1/2 the boats won't finish. And they say the winner is very likely to be a father in his 30's who is French. They also said that some sailors will never come back.
