West Marine and other on-line marine suppliers have various sizes of forward mosquito net hatch covers that are weighted and fit over the open hatch. My problem is that I don't have time to make my own and my boat is put away for the winter which prevents me from measuring the hatch. Can anyone help me out by telling me what size I need or at least giving the measurement for the 1983 forward hatch? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

When we made our screening for the hatch, we cut the velcro length wise as the 5/8" width was more than necessary. The concern was with installing/removing regularly, the screening material would be over stressed. I machine stitched the loop side to the vinyl screening material and used 3M 4200 to adhere the hook side to the inside on the hatch. We've had this for 6 years and it's a huge success!
I bought a netting that was sold for covering hatches believe by a company called Bugmasters. The size pretty much fit all forward hatches. It had weights (lead, etc) sewn into the perimeter. The times that I stayed overnight on the boat with the forward hatch open, I just took out my netting out of the plastic case that comes with it, opened the hatch and then threw the netting out and over the hatch. The weighted perimeter kept it against the deck. That seemed to work, though, not a custom screen for the hatch.
Y'all are not talking apples to apples. The screen with the weighted perimeter is a bag which allows you to put it over the hatch itself. That way you can change the opening of the hatch from inside. A piece of screen with velcro is a pathetic compromise compared to the real deal. I have had both and will always recommend the "bag o screen" over a a piece of bug net with velcro.
I got the name wrong. It's Bugbusters Hatch Screen. Defender currently sells it. Mine is pretty large - easily fits over the hatch. It may be the 25"x25" but they have other sizes available that may also fit.
Thinking about this some more, I probably bought one of the sizes above the 25 x 25. I will have to check the size...and may be able to do that tomorrow.

The bag really is a nice product.
Frank, doesn't a good gust of wind take that bag away? I mean, I know it's weighted, but still...
Plus, I tended to set the hatch and then not touch it again. Not sure why I'd need to pop my head up out of there. But, then again, I wasn't staying aboard for days; perhaps if it was a different use case it would be different. The velcro approach seemed to work fine for us and for our purposes.
There are a couple of instances where sticking your head out the hatch affords a better angle..... We have a screen with snaps at four corners, the toggles have pierced the screen though, so maybe the sreen bag approach would prevent that.
