Hello all! I am new to the site but have been enjoying it very much. I have an '86 catalina 25 and the stern railing attachment points leak. Has anyone taken theirs off before to rebed it? I read a post about fixing a loose traveler bolt and I fear that this will be the same process to access to two aft attachment points of the stern railing. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Unfortunately you will have to get in the dumpster and take a look. I resealed the two forward spots a while ago. It's definitely a two man job. one inside one outside.
Thank you very much. I took a look in their this weekend and it appears I will need to cut two inspection ports, one port and one starboard of the transom. I will just cover the openings with a louved SS vent. Thanks again
Well, it turns out that the aft attach points of the stern railing are not thru bolted on my boat. Instead they are attached to the core in the stern with self tapping screws. This is also true for the clam cleats for the traveler. No need to cut an access!
Hmmm... In my '85, the only core in the transom was foam. The gudgeons were attached with bolts going into tapped bronze plates that were probably glassed in before the deck/cockpit was mated to the hull--I'm wondering if they did something like that for the stanchions on the transom. Are the "self-tapping screws" pointed with large threads, or more like machine screws?
They are coarse threaded screws, not machine machine screws. The material they are theaded into seems to be very dense. I had assumed that is was ply or something of the like but I cannot see into the area and from what I can feel, whatever the material is, seems to be resin coated.
Screws along the transom and bolted by the gates = no holes to cut...nice. If you could let us know if this is the set up it would be valuable info. Photo's if possible would be great.
That's exactly what the set up is...thru bolted at the forward attach points of hte stern railing and screwed to the transom (no thru bolts) at the aft stern railing attachment points. The clam cleats for the traveler are affixed to the transom in the same manner.
Well if your boat is an 86 and mine is an 87 then I'm going to assume (we all know what that means) that I have the same set up. I don't know about earlier models though.
